the hand of Microsoft extends over Debian

#1 Post by Danielsan »

Apparently it seems that M$ is selling a distro, WLinux, based on Debian for its WSL.

https://wccftech.com/microsoft-20-linux ... s-10-1809/

Debian is the most important distro for all the floss ecology if M$ has discovered a way to trap Debian we are really in danger... :?
As I wrote in another thread we need a plan to escape from Linux... :!:

Presumably the GPL applies and anybody who pays for this can legally distribute copies to all and sundry?

Not that Microsoft will advertise this fact, ofc :mrgreen:

The shock was so strong that I didn't read carefully the article, this distro is made by White Waterfoundry and it is sold on the M$ store... :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops:

^ isn't it against the GPL to change the license?

anyhoo, the worst side effect will probably be an influx of "Help! i installed linux on windows and it dioesn't work! URGENT!" threads.

Sadly only the "WLinux-Specific Code" is MIT licensed... :-(
I would have loved watch the MS vs GPL fight with lotsa popcorn and drinks... :-P

Why is it a problem if microsoft distributes a Linux OS? windows store has has Ubuntu for a few years now. Linux is the most popular thing to run on Azure and there are many linux distros optimized for it. SUSE has one for example. And while AOSP is free and open source, and linux, practically all operating system made from it are not. It doesn't exactly take away from Debian that other people use it in other ways. The fact that they are selling it is a bit odd, because of the GPL and, frankly, who would pay for it? What can it offer that pure Debian cannot? It doesn't have enterprise optimizations or support plan, right?

Also, opening this shell from a context menu is not new, it was already in git for windows.

SSDD, I stopped worrying about it when I first got on debian, but now things are looking awfully familiar around here.

Perhaps someone will put this in print somewhere besides what's buried in court documents
or Hillary's email (strike that).

mmm$ now uses linux ( not the one for sale linked in this post ) for it's OPK
it switched to a linux based OPK for Windows 10 form the old OPK provided to them as a customized version of IBM's ImageUltra

Do your own mafhs... and while you're at it go check out the open groups web page and follow along.
If you really want to know do a histoy search of certified UNIX.

It's not rocket science but it does take an interest and some understanding of license history

Kinda like

Code: Select all

Parent  -   Children
.          -> Apple
IBM        -> Intel
.          -> Microsoft
There are surely grandparents. greatgrandparents and while sheeple around..

It's my understanding Debian is a FOSS project. as such it is developed and maintained by those who contribute to the effort; as such it doesn't seem to me like it's under control of M$

IBM just spent 1/3 of their net worth to purchase RedHat; IMHO IBM will turn into a RedHat/Linux company

now as far as megasoft goes-- they seem intent on running Linux stuff under Windows. Yuk.

I posted this in another thread but it really belongs in this one..
All it takes is a rudimentary search of the repo to see where megasofts contributions are in Linux. intel, IBM (with iptables as a appetizer), apple - oh wait that is already running on top of BSD - nevermind..... unless you like

AMD seem to take it's time releasing firmware.
