Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
I installed and enabled havegened.
Meanwhile I also updated the kernel to the 4.18.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 and installed the OS updates.
Some troubles rebooted twice (after power off and install OS updates) and it did not show any installation. After indeed it still had the OS updates pending.
There is a problem with this updates.
Now I' m using the 4.18.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 kernel.
How can I check via terminal the OS updates?

After all, it is much easier to upgrade your operating system from cli. Just run as rootScorpion wrote:How can I check via terminal the OS updates?

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
Does that mean no messages when booting up?
Other things for adventurous users:
Liquorix kernel backports: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... uorix-4.19
(see the Liquorix forum for install instructions)
4.19.12 backported kernel: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... .19-kernel
Soon to be updated to 4.19.13.
I'm also going to add the 4.20 kernel I backported from Experimental, but some Debian DKMS drivers won't build on it, notably Nvidia 390.87 and virtualbox-5.2.22.

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
yes this messages (random image)
Also every time it ask me to install OS updates, that I have to manually install or only check like now (yesterday I checked and installed updates).
As I said after pressing enter once I got some messages and one was problematic "apt daily download 5 minutes and still not completed".
Will the liquorix kernel be totally fine? With nvidia driver, cuda and everything?

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
@Scorpion I thought you marked this solved? It would be better to post actual messages or errors the system shows rather than say "it asked to update" or "I got some messages". Posting the result of the systemctl command in your image would be more useful than the image.
@Stevo I just updated siduction to 4.20 and needed to install Nvidia 415.25 from siduction's experimental repo.

Hello. I think it is unattended-upgrades. The purpose of this is to keep the computer current with the latest security (and other) updates automatically. You can disable it be typing this command in terminal (as root)Scorpion wrote:As I said after pressing enter once I got some messages and one was problematic "apt daily download 5 minutes and still not completed".
Code: Select all
systemctl stop apt-daily.service

systemctl disable apt-daily.service

"it asked to update" = (I' m using gnome 3) In notifications (and in Software) I saw OS updates to installsunrat wrote:@Scorpion I thought you marked this solved? "I got some messages" I reported the only problematic message. The others were fine and I did not have the time to read them since I got some seconds that I used to see the problematic one.
The problem was solved but I had a very slow boot and now I get this problem with the OS updates. And no boot messages.
So now it should be fine (except for the boot messages) and if it will be stuck again, since I disabled the apt-daily service as @None1975 said, it should boot not slowly.

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
Yes, the 4.20 kernel needs a newer Nvidia driver and Virtual Box than are in stretch-backports, but the 4.19 kernels are good with the drivers in backports--that includes the 4.19 Liquorix kernels. The standard Stretch versions are far too old for the newer kernels.sunrat wrote:@Scorpion I thought you marked this solved? Scorpion, I build and run the latest Liquorix kernels myself, and they work fine for me and many others.

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
What make the kernel "Liquorix" are the patches, which are applied in the Debian package building process.
If you're not applying those manually, you're just doing the vanilla kernel. I would suggest you look at my guide to using the OBS to rebuild your modified Liquorix kernel from the sources in the how-to section here. The kernel's config file in in /debian/config as "config".
You can also rebuild your modified Liquorix kernel packages on your own machine if you want, but then you have to learn how to build packages...maybe the "apt-get source <package>", "apt-get build-dep <package>", etc. procedure will work with the OBS if you add the deb-src line, though.

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
I am keeping to update and upgrade.
The 5.0.0-3.1-liquorix-amd64 kernel failed to load modules.
Also the 4.19 from backports failed to load modules, I am using the liquorix.
I am very ok with all the 4.20 liquorix kernel.
Is the 4.20.0-5.1-liquorix-amd64 more recent than the 4.20.0-15.1-liquorix-amd64?
But how can I select the default kernel?
The one in the "Debian GNU/Linux".

No. The clue is in the numbersScorpion wrote:I am very ok with the 4.20.0-5.1-liquorix-amd64. Is this more recent than the 4.20.0-15.1-liquorix-amd64?
What does "failed to load modules" mean? What happens when you try to boot the newer kernels, exactly?
Check the "Advanced Options" sub-menu in GRUB.Scorpion wrote:But how can I select the default kernel? The one in the "Debian GNU/Linux".

15>5 right
With the tty2 I checked gdm3 was running.
Must be nvidia modules, I am using driver and cuda.
Without the driver it should work fine.

You need to rebuild the NVIDIA drivers for each new kernel version.Scorpion wrote:Must be nvidia modules
The Debian nvidia-driver package includes hooks to do this automatically, have you installed directly from NVIDIA instead?

I installed the drivers from the debian package.
All the 4.20 liquorix works, as the 4.18 from backports.

Re: Problem when updating the kernel [SOLVED]
Kernel 5.0 needs Nvidia 418.43 drivers. It's only in experimental so far. Try at your own peril and definitely not in Stretch, but I suggest you stick to an older kernel if you need Nvidia.
