hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
Hi
i don't know if really a beginner question, but i think so:
i have now a new asus laptop asus gl553vd (i think it s the same than fx553vd), and i met some difficulties to install proprely some hardware
sound and wired network were ok since installation
VGA is now OK, bumblebee with nvidia (but not really tested)
i got my wireless card INTEL 7265D that produce some errors at boot but it works, so i would say OK
touchpad is ok xorg xserver synaptics installation was ok (found it yesterday)
i remain two hardware major difficulties
- fan speed (fan speed is ok with windows 10), but very loud and very cold in debian
- most of the keyboard fn keys don't work, i can't only use volume keys
i found that installation of more recent kernel could really help me, but i don't know how to setup another kernel on my machine (it requires 4.9.12 ?)
another solution could be installation of testing or beta version
could someone advice me?

Re: hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
thx for link,
which software for making a backup before upgrade in case of problems?
it seems that imeshift is not officially supported on debian 9.8?
i also searched for backintime, but never tested it

Please restrict yourself to a single topic per thread.enigma158an201 wrote:which software for making a backup before upgrade in case of problems?
Search the boards for an answer to that question first though, it has been discussed several times IIRC.

Re: hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
You can use Timeshift on Debian--the MX 17 packages are built on and work fine in vanilla Stretch.

Re: hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
well, i come back to my first topic -> i 'll post another for backup (maybe not so far since it's cause of testing version too)
so i wonder about possible bad issues with bumblebee and nvidia driver when upgrading kernel:
when installing these drivers, there was no support for open source driver other my debian version, and i was obliged to install nvidia proprietary drivers
i read that kernel 4.19 should be the next LTS kernel, and it should be able to handle my hardware, can you tell me more about VGA drivers?
my fear is that such a an upgrade can break my vga drivers
i consider myself as beginner with some basic skills, so installing drivers was not really a game for me
when writing these lines, i'm also making a virtual machine with testing version, it just finish

Re: hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
If you install inxi and give us the results of
in code tags here, we'll be able to better see what hardware you have and how it is working with the drivers. Note that all recent Intel hardware does require non-free firmware for its best performance--exactly which version depends on the hardware--and Debian does not install that firmware by default.

Re: hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
inxi is already installed and just freeze when executing in graphic mode
it works only in recovery mode...
i send you a picture with results when done
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1OGGXt ... 73b4rSBmsp
This is normal that there 2 swaps because of a dual installation of debian stretch and debian buster on thé same disk
in fact i'm trying on this machine
debian stretch with kernel 4.9.0.8 (loud fan noise, rpm sensor not detected properly, but working since fn keys doesn't work)
debian buster with kernel 4.19.? (freeze when loading GUI, will try install bumblebee)
i still have free space on that disk, i will also try a clone of my stretch installation and then upgrade to a newer kernel
i found a useful command when looking on the internet, so i also give you result of dmesg
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1DfPMI ... ElSl6sdt8i
it seems there is also possibiliy to upgrade bios to 307 instead of actual 306

Re: hardware conf drivers and debian testing versions
Following my previous message, debian buster installed:
* Bumblebee doesn't seem toi be ok
-> I succeded on displaying desktop but i think it remains Bad issues I think i use i915 driver
* Inxi -f doesn't work better
* i can't setup wifi connection on hidden ssid
-> i will try on visible ssid later (edit: OK with visible SSID)
* fn keys seems to work
* touchpad works too
* Fans are still loud whereas in idle mode then are shut down when on Windows
edit2: i made copy of my partition and installed new kernel (with a dependency error about gcc), but it seems to work well
almost everything is ok, including fn keys, except the fan speed still detected at 0 rpm and always noisy
here is my new inxi -F with new kernel 4.19 on stretch
