Kodi is a big risk for Malware

#1 Post by bester69 »

Hi,

Yesterday I launched Kodi, and suddenly started to download additional components (more than usual), scripts and things named crypto or something similar.. then I read on google, that they were using kodi system backdoors as zombies bots for crypto money and stuff like that...I Inmediatly downloaded Eset Antivirus and runned in .kodi folder, and It found a malware script and put it into quarantine folder.

By now, Ive removed all unused addons repositories, and disabled autoupdate of them.. Im not sure if Its enought with all of theses measures.

Watch out.! :x

Let me take a wild guess: You have downloaded an infected addon...?

With Windows security mentality comes Windows security risk.
Don't download random stuff from the Internet, and at least try to keep your system fully patched. Don't run outdated browsers, kernels etc.
You've been here before and I won't repeat the same things again.

I think it is improper to say that Kodi is a risk of Malware. I have been using Kodi on a daily basis from 2013 without any problems. I strongly believe that Kodi is very safe software, especially since the source code is open and it is widely followed by many people. However, Kodi allows the extension of the software using addons and many of these are dubious to be honest, dealing with distributing copyrighted content illegally and so on. I'm not surprised that there is malware there as it is widely used trick of malware authors to infect people that use things of low moral status like porn or illegal entertainment content, as then those users are less likely to report them (because they would have to admit to participating in lowly stuff)...

well, when i said kodi, I meant kodi's addons...
As we all know, the only purpose for kodi to exist, is to be able to use addons that allow us to watch illegal entertainment content for free :o (porn is for sinners or for "Organic Portals", it opens back soul gates to realm, I'd recommend you not to watch it.)

No. Free-software just like a knife can be used for good or bad. If you decide to use not free addons it's your prerogative. If it bites you in the arse it's not kodi's fault it's yours. You were the one that installed the addons. Take responsibility for your actions and don't blame others

I use kodi for streaming videos from my RPi-based NAS to my TV and youtube. I'm not saying the youtube addon couldn't become malware-infested, but it's not one of those especially shady ones that tend to interface with sites loaded with smut.

EDITED to add: So I'm saying, there are reasons to use kodi other than shady addons
