AMD GPU?

#1 Post by KitchM »

What is the expert consensus regarding trying to get Debian to work on AMD GPUs? I've certainly tried a lot to get the graphics working, as you can see at http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=142330. Is it worth the hassle, or should a person just go Intel?

What do you all think?

I think you give up to easily, and I also think you should not have started another topic on this, just to refer us back to the other topic, I will post something in the other topic, something you did not mention doing. Maybe Debian is not a good choice for you, for many it is not the easiest system to install, configure and administer, this includes me, and all though I still keep Debian on some VM's , to diagnose problems, and be able to try to duplicate problems that I see posted here, guess that is kind of another topic, but for my personal use, I use something else, and when I need to install something quickly, easily , for example on a laptop for my grandchildren, or one of the locals, I install a different Linux distro, on that is easy and quick to install on most any hardware, The MX: https://mxlinux.org/
As you can see, in the other thread you linked to, at least one member here has installed Debian to a system using AMD GPUs, and also suggested to you about using Debian Buster,...see what I mean, what is the point in another thread, when we keep needing to refer to the other one, that just confuses the issues more, please do not keep doing this, it is yet another symptom of someone that gives up way to easy, "Oh no those answers are not what I want, so I will just start another topic,.." Any way, back to the original topic, ..
Ahh, PS, do some real research, and look at some of the issues with Intel these days, using AMD GPUs like Ryzen, is a very valid choice, and there are many reasons to avoid Intel,..edited: I will add, the folks at INTEL, love it when people give up so easy and just keep using it, just like MS monopoly loves it when people don't dare try using better OS's and software.

While you have valid points, many of which I support in general, what I believe you missed is the point that I could find no solution after literally days of research. After decades of use of various distros, the smoothness and stability of Debian is far superior, IMHO. Even the install is above the rest. Those who try to improve upon it, like Ubuntu, fail miserably. (I am saying this in focus on a daily desktop system. CentOS is my favorite server. If anyone actually cares.)

As to why a few have gotten it to work, there are different APUs and CPU/GPU combinations in the mix, as well as different version of the OS. It may be that there is some question about the quality consistency of the processor itself between one and another. Who knows? Obviously, there is a problem with things working right "out of the box", so to speak.

I doubt that the problem is the distro. One of the problems is the closed source of the hardware manufacturer's chip pathways.

I will not be giving up any time soon, of course, but I do need to get on with my life, and AMD has not shown itself up to the task as in years past.

I also appreciate your support of the AMD brand in comparison to Intel. That is the point of this separate and unrelated subject here. We will yet see if others agree with you.

Yes.

No.

Intel's integrated graphics chips now require non-free firmware, just like the AMD versions, and Intel's CPU design is garbage.

The problem with seeking a consensus on "AMD GPUs and Debian" is that AMD/ATI have manufactured roughly 82 million different GPUs over the last several years. They are categorized with specific "series" (e.g. "Sea Island") and are based on a specific "architecture" (GCN I, GCN II, etc). If you get a GPU to work with a specific kernel (version x), consider your self lucky and never upgrade anything ever. With any other model of GPU with any other version of various pieces of software involved (video drivers, microcode, kernel, Xorg, etc), and it may work or it may not work.

If your GPU is built into the CPU, then good luck determining what GPU it is actually using (and which "series" and/or "architecture") and what software you need, because almost everything ever written on the internet about Linux and AMD GPUs is about discrete graphics cards, not built-in APUs.

So my rule of thumb has become: avoid AMD graphics.

Seems pretty easy to me:

Code: Select all

empty@E485:~ $ lspci | grep VGA
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raven Ridge [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series] (rev c4)
empty@E485:~ $

From somebody who doesn't use AMD graphics.

I have the same device as you and we have another post here from somebody else with Vega 8 graphics, we both have ours working just fine.

Raven Ridge in general has been kind of a bumpy ride on Linux. It took a while, but I think Vega graphics has finally worked out the kinks. The main thing you have to watch when buying AMD CPUs is making sure the motherboard's BIOS isn't a pile of junk. For some reason, there were BIOS bugs abound that took forever to be fixed (and in some cases, were never fixed). This is especially true with AMD laptops where Linux compatibility is still all over the place and can vary between models from the same vendor. Personally, I wonder if comments from some vendors about AMD not having proper product support is contributing to the problem.

That said, non-Vega GPUs work pretty well under amdgpu. I had a low end R7 240 at one point in one of my computers and it worked fine.

You'll want to roll your own latest kernels, and mesa stack if possible. Or even use a distribution that is more bleeding edge. AMD is well supported in Linux, but you'll need the latest code.

Really?
I find it hard to believe that this is at all true.
Because it makes no sense at all why it would be so hard to find out.

For these who can read a code, it is easy to find by AMD_IS_APU flag

62 GCN APU ids currently supported by AMDGPU driver (just 8 by default, as CIK (Kaveri, Kabini, Mullins) defaults to radeon driver but users of these could enable to use amdgpu driver instead), but there will be couple more later on as 3000 Serie APUs for sure will be GCN too, 4000 APUs next year might be too even, unsure in this but i wouldn't be surprised if that would still be with Vega cores) :D

For a driver, there are really just 4 main groups of GCN APUs there - Kaveri, Kabini, Carrizo and Vega based and just 3 main CPU differences

There is no SI APU (GCN 1.0), to say there are just APUs with GCN 1.1, GCN 1.2 or Vega cores
