replacing intel desktop rom with opensource firmware

I'd like to replace Intel's outdated firmware on my aging desktop with up to date coreboot / libreboot etc...

Being completely uninformed at dealing with firmware
I would appreciate any operational suggestions on
what would be a feasible option for me to safely apply this move

Is there an option to physically replace the current CMOS hardware on my desktop
with a compatible firmware component custom flashed for my desktop ?

Can i find opensource firmware preinstalled desktops - at reasonable prices on the market ?
I could'nt find any

I'd appreciate any help & willing to pay for it within my budget limits

Firmware (in this case microcode) is built-into the CPU. What Debian (through non-free repo) and other distros distrubute are updates to that firmware.

Yes, you will need to flash the motherboard and ithe CPU and yes, that must be done by a professional. You can buy already flashed CPU's from vendors such as Purism and System76.

It must be done by a professional, otherwise you risk borking the motherboard.

@vryni, I was thinking along the same lines to change the firmware of my Dell with coreboot / libreboot but could not find anything compatible. They have specified which models are compatible on their website. You need first check compatibility and only then think about flashing it. Which is quite sensitive and if anything goes wrong then as Wheelerof4te pointed out you stand the risk of bricking your system.

Suffering from shiny-new-stuff syndrome? I have 20+ year-old computers that still work fine without ever having had the BIOS reflashed. What, exactly, are you trying to accomplish? My 2012 Dell laptop is my go-to portable, I certainly am not going to try to flash it.

Some people think flashing their laptops with core/libreboot will give them Stallman's stamp of approval. In addition to percieved improved privacy.
