Problem with Buster + Nvidia
Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
This is strange! ... Why is the package in sid then?
NVidia itself also still offers it for download as the current version.
But even if NVidia doesn't develop it any further, why would Debian-stable exclude the latest version of it?

Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
Debian Stable is supported for 3 years by a security team. That package is non-free, meaning it can't be modified by Debian developers to tackle security problems.
So they removed it, since they can't support is for 3 years because NVIDIA dropped support. Sid is not as strict with security as Stable, but I can guess developers will also remove it from Sid soon.
Ask NVIDIA why they dropped support for those cards. Debian has nothing to do with that toxic company, and it's not obliged to package insecure software just because.

Ok, I understand! Thank you!
Just to be sure, that we are not all misled and the debian package-site is just not up to date yet ... could you please run the "apt policy"-command for me? ... I have no Debian running yet.

EDIT: H_on_a_S has Sid repo enabled, I don't. That's why she can install it, and I can't.

I don't know if it will help or not, but I always download and install the iso from the "Unofficial non-free images including firmware packages" site:
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... -firmware/
It always saves me a few bumps in the road when dealing with my wifi card, etc.
p.s.
I have an nvidia card

Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
It won't, because NVIDIA's driver is not included in that iso. However, many firmware files are, so it is still recommended iso for most laptops.piperdan wrote:I don't know if it will help or not, but I always download and install the iso from the "Unofficial non-free images including firmware packages" site:

Thank you guys anyway!
Last thing I can think of: I install a fresh Debian and then download the .run file directly from NVIDIA and execute it. Maybe this will work.

Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
You will have to do that again every time the kernel is updated though. The Debian NVIDIA packages should do this automatically.Thomas123 wrote:I install a fresh Debian and then download the .run file directly from NVIDIA and execute it. Maybe this will work.

Ok, good to know! Thank you!
The other open option though, is the stretch-backports package, you mentioned. I think, I try this first.

Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
Hi! I have mainboard ASRock N68-GS4 with the built-in NVIDIA GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a GPU. Stretch-backports obviously does not work. nouveau is working well with the simple graphics, but hangs my host when playing videos using vlc.Thomas123 wrote:Ok, good to know! Thank you!

The system is upgraded to Buster, so downgrade is not possible in easy way (well it would be better if some warning would be issued before the upgrade). The simplest for me would be to quickly buy working graphic card. I do not need anything special, but something working with the existing free software in Debian: 3d games, video players (vlc, mpv) etc. Can somebody recommend something working for me?
Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
If your only problem is with playing videos using vlc ... I would simply choose another player. Smplayer in my view has better features than vlc anyways.

Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
If you choose SMPlayer, it can use either a rather aging mplayer, or mpv as the player backend. I recommend mpv, myself.

1. I have another problem with smplayer and online tv m3u8u playlists. VLC just worked.Thomas123 wrote:If your only problem is with playing videos using vlc ... I would simply choose another player. Smplayer in my view has better features than vlc anyways.
2. Unfortunately not. After some time I figured out that nouveau hangs my PC randomly.
Just bought the cheapest, but new nvidia card, disabled the onboard and everything works again but with the nouveau driver! Finally free from proprietary crap!
Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
Too late for me, but if somebody need 304xx for buster, you can try this:

To download patched driver installer:
Please tell if you succeed!

Re: Problem with Buster + Nvidia
Thank you sena!
I would like to try this, because I still have the problem and refrained from using Debian because of it. ... But this seems unfortunately way over my abilities.
