[Resolved] Sound not working after Buster upgrade

#1 Post by pcdoctor01 »

My sound was working in Stretch but now I have no sound after upgrading to Buster.
Alsamixer look ok.
Nothing is muted in the Alsamixer.
Any ideas why I don't have sound?
Thanks!

Would install and launch pavucontrol. Look around in its settings. Ie: Anything muted, right sound card selected etc.

Pavucontrol looks normal.
I'm going to boot a Debian 10 live DVD and see if I can get sound from it.
I booted a Debian 10 live DVD and when running the installer with speech synthesis, I hear sound.
So, I know this means my sound card works.

No sound when doing a speaker test.
speaker-test -c2 -l 1

speaker-test 1.1.8

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right
Time per period = 12.440660

Dang was hoping it'd be an easy fix. Audio works during a live Buster session? This is a fully fresh install, not an upgraded Stretch? If a laptop does it have function keys that control volume-etc? What/which firmware packages are installed, non-free? Frustrating spot, keep chipping away and you'll get it.

When the live install menu comes up, I picked speech synthesis and I heard speech during the install.
This was an upgrade from Stretch to Buster.
I ended up doing a fresh install and I have sound now.
I guess something got corrupted during the upgrade from Stretch to Buster.
I was probably too impatient and should have waited for a fix but...
Thanks so much for responding!
