Evolution Exchange, Office365 / Outlook email [Solved]

#1 Post by propofol123 »

I updated to Buster recently and my work email via the MS Exchange account on Evolution disappeared. It seems that evolution-ews is no longer available due to this bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=926712. Are there any other email clients that supports MS Exchange web services? I moved to Evolution from KMail specifically for this reason.

Regards,
Stefan

There is Thunderbird plugin, it's paid though. So you need to install Evolution and Exchange plugin from Sid or wait, or pay for Thunderbird plugin.

This is dumb. I mean if Microsoft doesn't allow you to access the mailbox from a email client, then cannot you setup another normal email account and forward all the mail there?

Davmail? Available from Repository.
Ever wanted to get rid of Outlook ? DavMail is
a POP/IMAP/SMTP/Caldav/Carddav/LDAP exchange gateway allowing users to use any
mail/calendar client (e.g. Thunderbird with Lightning or Apple iCal) with an
Exchange server, even from the internet or behind a firewall through Outlook
Web Access. DavMail now includes an LDAP gateway to Exchange global address
book and user personal contacts to allow recipient address completion in mail
compose window and full calendar support with attendees free/busy display.

The main goal of DavMail is to provide standard compliant protocols in front
of proprietary Exchange. This means LDAP for global address book, SMTP to send
messages, IMAP to browse messages on the server in any folder, POP to retrieve
inbox messages only, Caldav for calendar support and Carddav for personal
contacts sync. Thus any standard compliant client can be used with Microsoft
Exchange.

DavMail gateway is implemented in java and should run on any platform.
Releases are tested on Windows, Linux (Ubuntu) and Mac OSX. Tested
successfully with the Iphone (gateway running on a server).

It's crap. For serious usage, direct support should be there, no "gateway".

This is a work email address & for confidentiality reasons forwarding is not available. For the same reason a gateway is unfortunately not a good option.

Office365 allows to access mailbox by smtp/imap, Exchange is not required. However, only with Exchange you also get access to calendar and contacts.

I was not aware of this. Thanks, I will see if I can get this working. I don't use the contacts / calendar anyway.

Sorry, initially I did not realize what Davmail is. This works very well, I managed to get it up and running in no time & have access to all my work email in Evolution. It turned out that direct access via IMAP/SMTP is not an option.

Thanks!!

I am not sure why. The email is via a company account and there is no support for non MS email clients. The only way I could get access on Android was via Nine. I have tried:
Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) outlook.office365.com SSL port:993
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com TLS port:587
but no joy.

Hell everybody,

I just would like to add for any beginner (like me?) that might need to get this working a small how to of the current fix.

The evolution-ews package is now in debian-backports fixed back in July, but you need to add it to your /etc/apt/sources.list

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-backports main
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian buster-backports main
and force the use of it with the -t option like so:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install evolution-ews -t buster-backports
I hope this helps someone.

i know this is solved but my wife needs it for her university job. i tried for a year or 2 and could never get it working. I found this last year or so and it worked perfectly. you have to follow everything carefully. last time i installed it there were a few attempts and not sure f i missed something and messed up or if it took a few attempts. but to this day it works.

I have a question evolution-ews is a plugin of evolution or is it another version of evolution.
I have installed it and I don't see any difference. In fact to configure my office 365 account I need to put SSL connection on the imap server and I do not see how to do it because there is no option....
