**solved*** unable to install usb wifi adapter

#1 Post by emiliocb4 »

hello all,
i've the following distro:
Linux nas 4.19.0-0.bpo.5-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.37-4~bpo9+1 (2019-06-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux

after a long time i've finally found a working driver (at least compiling and installing)
https://github.com/minjae/rtl8821au.git

i can see the usb device:
root@nas:~/rtl8821au# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:b812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
but i can only see the ethernet interface
root@nas:~# lshw -C network
*-network
description: Ethernet interface
product: VT6102/VT6103 [Rhine-II]
vendor: VIA Technologies, Inc.
physical id: 12

version: 7c
serial: 00:19:66:99:b9:14
size: 100Mbit/s
capacity: 100Mbit/s
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd autonegotiation

resources: irq:23 ioport:c000(size=256) memory:fdfff800-fdfff8ff
any ideas?

thanks a lot
Emilio

Have you changed the sources.list to add contrib and non-free?

I think that is the wrong driver for your device. Try this one - https://github.com/jeremyb31/rtl8822bu
And you may also need to install the package firmware-realtek from non-free repo.

Found on https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php?topic=6813.0 using search term debian 0bda:b812

thank you. using the package linked by you i was able to install correctly the driver.
i've already installed the firmware-realtek packge.

now i correctly see the device:
root@nas:~# lshw -C network
*-network

This has got a bit beyond my pay grade so I hoped a network expert would weigh in. Couple of ideas though: what do you get with this command?

Code: Select all

su -
<enter root password>
rfkill list
Or if you have sudo set up:

Code: Select all

sudo 'rfkill list'

unfortunately no block are present:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

any other ideas?

Solved. The issue were related the gateway, because the wifi interface were unable to write its own route to the routing table. So i shutdown the eth interface and usinf only the wifi all works fine.
