Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
I am using an XPS 13 9380 laptop. I have my usb stick connected to the usb c port through an adapter. I used ][this code][/https://www.quora.com/On-a-Dell-XPS-13- ... otable-USB] to allow me to boot from the usb and I booted it through UEFI. I went through the setup excluding the partition part because when I got there the only device it detected was my USB, while I wished it write to my computer's disk. What could be causing this problem and how do I fix it?
Also on a less relevant note how to I login to wifi through the installer if the wifi requires you to enter a username and password?
Sorry if the formatting is a bit weird I'm not to familiar with the style that this site uses.

Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
Your disk name is probably something like nvme0n1:
certification.ubuntu.com: Ubuntu on Dell XPS 13 9380

Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk

Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
Do you have latest BIOS from Dell?
Predecessor has problem with it:

Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
I think that very likely is the problem but unfortunately I have tried through a couple of means to install the BIOS update and it has failed in all cases (I tried just running the exe on my computer which launched the update thing went to the bios update screen did update for a couple of minutes then failed after that I tried updating from a flash drive which failed in the exact same way). If you have any idea on how to fix that I would love to hear, otherwise I will try to update again tomorrow and try to get everything worked out and will probably update this thread in 24 hours.ruwolf wrote:Do you have latest BIOS from Dell?
Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
Perhaps try another distribution with a newer kernel, such as fedora or suse. If the disk is detected by them, then we at least know it's possible. That would narrow down the problem to Debian's kernel version likely.

Fedora was also unable to detect a disk to install to.vbrummond wrote:Perhaps try another distribution with a newer kernel, such as fedora or suse. If the disk is detected by them, then we at least know it's possible. That would narrow down the problem to Debian's kernel version likely.
Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
If you are sure it's not hardware, the next likely thing is that the hardware either has no driver or is blacklisted. I can look into it.

Yes, it appears there are severe problems with the device.

You'll need to update the firmware.

Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
I updated my disk but I'm not sure how to check if it worked and after that I tried updating my bios then I checked the bios version and it had not changed. I figured I might was well try installing debian again (I also tried fedora to see if newer kernel helped) and I had the same issue.
Re: Debian Installer Not Detecting Disk
In case some find this what fixed the problem was going to the BIOS setup and System Configuration > SATA Operation and select AHCI.
