debian9-stretch-gnome login sound

#1 Post by dblake2 »

I was running xfce desktop but decided to add gnome & now can't find 'startup apps' or whatever it is that plays sound when you login.

I can play it manually but it's silent when I log in.

It should be in gnome-tweaks package: https://screenshots.debian.net/package/gnome-tweaks

I found the tweaker. it already had 'login sound' in there but nothing was playing.

I tried to open it no luck so I deleted it thinkng to add it back but it wasn't in the list.

this new version doesn't seem to offer the option of inputting manual commands like debian8 with xfce.

I've got a desktop-login.ogg in /usr/share/sounds/moblin/stereo & I can play it manually from a terminal with ogg123 but there's nothing on login.

any ideas?

Do you have installed libcanberra? It is allegedly needed: Ubuntu-Mate.community: [Tutorial] Sounds during boot up, shutdown, reboot
Thas tutorial is for power-on and power-off, but login logout should be analogous, in my opinion: CyberGnomer.wordpress.com: Startup and Shutdown sounds for Gnome 3

This is frustrating (welcome to linux).
I seem to have all the files but the login refuses to play on gnome
I switched to xfce desktop & was able to get it going there but xfce startup app allows you to enter the command line manually whereas gnome startup apps has only a list of preselected programs to choose from, unless I'm doing something wrong--log in as root maybe?

below is whats in my ....../gnome/autostart directory:

root@debian:/usr/share/gnome/autostart# ls
libcanberra-login-sound.desktop
login-sound.desktop
--------------------------------------------
root@debian:/usr/share/gnome/autostart# cat libcanberra-login-sound.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=GNOME Login Sound
Comment=Plays a sound whenever you log in
Exec=/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
AutostartCondition=GSettings org.gnome.desktop.sound event-sounds
X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=Application
X-GNOME-Provides=login-sound
-------------------------------------------------
root@debian:/usr/share/gnome/autostart# cat login-sound.desktop

ogg123 /usr/share/sounds/moblin/stereo/desktop-login.ogg
--------------------------------------------------
another question is how to get 'startup sound' back in the gnome startup app?
It was originally there but nothing played & I don't see it listed as a selection.
