Bullseye on Dell XPS 15 7590

#1 Post by ClintonWinant »

Note added:Following the instructions at https://support.killernetworking.com/kn ... ntu-16-04/ I have succeeded in making the Killer card work with Debian Bullseye.

I have installed Bullseye from debian-live-testing-amd64-cinnamon+nonfree.iso 2019/07/22. I have had tu use USB tethering to connect to LAN, otherwise evrything runs well. Here is the output of LSPCI:

I have two questions:
The new Dell XPS 15 comes with the Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 card, based on the Intel AX2000. Various posts suggest that this is supported by Kernel 5.1, and that a compatible iwlwifi kernel can be found in backports. Can anyone help me figure out how I would do that? I suppose I need to begin by adding a new source to /etc/apt/sources.list, but what would that be, and how would I proceed even if I did find a compatible firmware.

In my cinnamon distribution I am unable to cahnge setting. if for instance in the menu I select Prefrences/Display a winding clock icon appears briefly, once it disappears there is not settings window. There must be an error logged somewhere? I would be grateful for advice as to how to troubleshoot this

I haven't checked those post, but the latest version debian itself has packaged is currently the 4.19 kernel.
Have a nice day!

The Liquorix kernel is currently providing 5.1 kernels for Debian:

If you still need firmware that firmware-iwlwifi doesn't have, it is possible to manually download the files from the kernel's firmware git repo and manually install them on your machine.

Thanks for both replies. The answer pointing to Liquorix and to manually install the frmware are most interesting, however beyond my current skill level. In either case I have no idea how to proceed. I know only how to modify /etc/apt/sources.list, how to upgrade, and how to make (./config make make install). Could you suggest witch of the two options you have suggested would be easier, and point me towards tutorials that might help me along? Most grateful for your comments

Use the repositories rather than installing stuff manually, not all make files have uninstall functions and it can be irritating tracking down all the dependencies.

Ask the interweb for tutorials :)
