[solved] low volume after upgrade to 10.x

$ grep volume /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
flat-volumes = no
; enable-deferred-volume = yes
; deferred-volume-safety-margin-usec = 8000
; deferred-volume-extra-delay-usec = 0

... yet audio volumes are low on vlc and web "apps" such as youtube and video servers when volume controls are maximized, along with Pulse Audio Volume Control. How to correct audio volumes in 10.x, please?

What does alsamixer show to you?

alsamixer indicates:
Card/Chip: PulseAudio
F5 indicates Master enabled "00" maxed at 100<>100, Capture at 43<>43.

And what about F6?

F6 indicates that "- (default)" is selected, which worked in Debian 9. I suppose the two other choices are worth investigating, but I don't use the HDMI port:

Selecting the HDA Intel PCH indicates Master enabled 100, Headphone enabled 100<>100 and PCM enabled 100<>100.

Have you modified daemon.conf yourself? If so try moving it and re-installing the pulseaudio package.

And what does pavucontrol show in output devices?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Each was carefully followed to no avail, until I accidentally knocked the laptop onto the carpeted floor, and the volume control returned to normal. I'll open the case and clean everything with an electronics cleaner, as I now suspect that some dust was shorting the sound chip legs somewhere.
