qemu-system-x86_64: terminating on signal 15

#1 Post by Bulkley »

Gnome-Boxes will not pass through to either the host file system or to USB. I've tried a number of guests, some installed, some running as live-cd. All of them display the same errors. Here's the log for a guest Debian 10.

My guess is the lack of support?
Core i3-2100;
Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) ‡ NO

Thank you for your reply. Yes, this is an old box however it does have virtualization and I have it turned on. Without it qemu simply hangs. The setup in gnome-boxes is as quick as I can get with this machine.

I notice that libvirtd has no libvirtd.conf. Is Spice controlling libvirt?

I'm not sure what the question is?
I've never wondered about a libvirt.d...

Yes, the gui front ends likely all do the same and make libvirt calls and wite out xml equivalent to what you'd type into virsh. I suppose....

To be sure:

Code: Select all

root@computer:/var/log# dmesg | grep DMAR
[ 0.825260] DMAR: Intel(R) Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O

Code: Select all

/var/log# dmesg | grep DMAR
Shows nothing. So you think my BIOS is telling porkies?

Edited to add,

Code: Select all

~$ lscpu
shows

Code: Select all

Virtualization: VT-x

I do.
The DMAR result is for VT-d which your cpu does not have. In the lscpu result it is more accurate to see it as VT-x as a variable since there is more than one letter, and lscpu doesn't itemize...

Something works. I'm typing this from a live Bunson Labs Helium running in gnome-boxes. Some things work but redirection does not. I can post this but I can't attach the error message which I will have to edit from outside the VM.

Added in from my host machine:

Code: Select all

char device redirected to /dev/pts/0 (label charserial0)

BTW, I have searched for "qemu-system-x86_64: usb-redir warning: usb-redir connection broken during migration" and found several responses but none that mirrored my problem, none that I understood.

I should have found this earlier but this is interesting:

Code: Select all

~$ gnome-boxes --checks

(gnome-boxes:17976): Boxes-WARNING **: util-app.vala:270: Failed to execute child process "virsh" (No such file or directory)

(gnome-boxes:17976): Boxes-WARNING **: util-app.vala:250: Failed to execute child process "restorecon" (No such file or directory)
• The CPU is capable of virtualization: yes
• The KVM module is loaded: yes
• Libvirt KVM guest available: no
• Boxes storage pool available: no
Could not get 'gnome-boxes' storage pool information from libvirt. Make sure 'virsh -c qemu:///session pool-dumpxml gnome-boxes' is working.
• The SELinux context is default: no

Report bugs to <https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gnome-boxes>.
Boxes home page: <https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Boxes>.
Now I have to figure out how to start virsh and restorecon whatever they are.

Well, I don't use gnome-boxes. I also can't confirm anything since I only have VT-d machines. I do occasionally use 'usb redirection' but usually I use a vfio passed usb controller that does require VT-d for sure. I also use entirely virtual usb, no real device or port, which does not need it.
Good luck and enjoy,

CwF, thanks for the link and your suggestions. I have no illusions of beating this but it holds my interest for now. My computer may have what is necessary but it is certainly bare minimum. Boxes does run virtual machines better than I have been able to do with gemu or Vbox or Virtual Machine, etc; it just leaves out redirects. Oh well, something to tinker with.

Is the spice-vdagent package installed in BL? If that fixes things for you then you should probably tell the BL folks to include it in their base package list.
