buster finishing installation takes long

#1 Post by Chrisdb »

hello,

When I try to install Debian Buster, everything is going nice just up until the installer finishes.
I get the following message:

Code: Select all

Running remove live packages..
This operations takes about 8 min.
Is it normal it takes so long? Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

thx

Hi,
Presumably it would speed it up to use an official Debian installation image rather than a live install image but since installation is usually a one-off job what does it matter?
DebianStable

Code: Select all

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Debian does have official live installer images.
Chrisdb wrote:This operations takes about 8 min.
But what about installing from a non-live installer? Does that take as long?

Unfortunately, we need more information to give you a more useful answer. For example, the live installer might have halted at that step (whether or not it finished the task), or the live installer might (wrongly) show that message while it was actually doing another lengthier task.

As it has already been mentioned, it would not hurt to try a non-live installer.

I just installed my system with the non-live installer, but the whole installation process took a lot longer now
With the live installer it took about 20 minutes (the 8 minute problem included), but now it took almost an hour to complete...

And in addition to that, the linux-firmware package was not installed, so I had to install it manually (this wasn't the case with the live installer)

Note: after the live installer I needed to upgrade all packages and this took a lot of time :D
It also seems the non-live installer installs much more packages...
But still, is 1 hour normal to install Debian Buster?

Could there be something wrong with your hard drive? Might be worth checking to eliminate possibilities.

I suppose installing a full DE can take extra time. Personally, I only install the base system, and then install the DE separately (Gnome in my case) so I can have a more streamlined system with less GUI software installed.

But even then, an hour seems excessive. It took me less than half an hour on an ASUS tablet that uses an SD card for storage. Unless you have a slow computer or maybe a slow optical drive.

I don't think there's anything wrong with my hardware, unless it's because I have a HD instead of a SSD?

From what I can tell, the unpacking/installation process per package was not really fast...

What about reading from the HDD? Is access times slow too? Slow boot as well? Does/did Windows run ok?

The 'Reading database' step from the package installation took the longest I believe...

When I ran Windows, the boot process was extremely slow. That's why I installed a linux distro in the first place, to be able to run a DE (XFCE) without unnecessary bloat :D

So it was the same with Windows? That would point to hardware or specifically the hard drive.

How about telling us your hardware spec?
Tell your your computer make/model and the results of:

Code: Select all

... and we'll go from there.
