Clean install of Buster on a laptop; mostly working. Since the install, when I get a system message that software updates are available, the updates fail every time. This is in the Software app, which I believe is part of gnome. I get the update notification, but then the following message:
Unable to download updates from "extensions.gnome.org":
failed to download https://extensions.gnome.org//static/extensions.json:
Cannot resolve hostname
The weird thing is, if I ping extensions.gnome.org I get a response from oscp-router02.gnome.org, so obviously some form of name resolution is taking place.
If I run dig on extensions.gnome.org, the returned status is NXDOMAIN.
I ran apt-get update, and did not get any errors.
What am I missing?

Re: gnome Software application; updates failing
I'm not sure why this is showing up as an update. It appears to be a script source for gnome extensions which can be copied, but it is not a source file in that it will not install. It may be that a developer used the wrong address header and gnome updates mistakenly identifies it.

Re: gnome Software application; updates failing
Thanks, but how do I fix this up? The system is not doing any updates because of this. I tried to attach a screen capture, but I keep getting "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."
*update: If I dismiss the warning, the next one I get is "Unable to download updates: internet access was required but wasn't available" followed by a "Network Settings" button. The thing is, I'm typing this message on the machine, and since you're reading it, I clearly have internet access. If I click the button, I get a screen with config settings for the wired ethernet connection. Is the updater not finding my wifi connection?

Re: gnome Software application; updates failing
Buster doesn't have any updates yet, anyway. At least, not from Debian.

Re: gnome Software application; updates failing
Thanks for the info. Buster having no updates is good to know, but not really a solution to the problem of gnome-software being confused about its own internet connection. I suspect something else is going on. I selected restart and install updates, and noted that the update process completed, followed by a second automagic reboot of the laptop. The gnome-software app now says it's up to date. Maybe it's just a glitch in the app, or something weird was up in the laptop's settings. Anyway, call it solved for now; is there a way to mark the issue described in this thread solved?

Edit the title of the first post and add [SOLVED} at the beginning.zapstrap wrote:is there a way to mark the issue described in this thread solved?
EDIT: I just tried gnome-software and it gave an error to begin with, then worked fine. Maybe a bug. I don't know, but it probably doesn't matter if it continues to work.

Pardon? There have been 21 security updates in August alone.phenest wrote:Buster doesn't have any updates yet, anyway. At least, not from Debian.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome Software application; updates failing
Gnome extensions are usually js/json scripts. The unpackaged source script should not be appearing in updates. The address header must be wrong and the file appears not to be on a gnome.org server.

@sunrat:
I don't use the security repo. Wasn't aware of any there.

Please remove your computer from the internet if it doesn't get security updates.phenest wrote:@sunrat:
