[Fixed] How did "hollywood" get into Debian with that music?

It's not public domain, that's for sure. The debian/copyright file just says "mi.mp4" is copyright by the program's developer, which I'm sure that Famous Music would have something to say about: https://variety.com/2017/film/news/miss ... 202519677/

This was a concern of mine when I ported Hollywood from its PPA for MX Linux a couple years ago, so I replaced that file with some DFSG-safe dramatic music released under a Creative Commons license.

It seems to be the same version available on archive.org of which the pages claim to be CC licence. Also on YouTube. Said to be the version remixed by U2 for the "Mission Impossible" film with Tom Cruise.
The CC claims would appear to be BS.

I'd file a bug report against it if I was running pure Debian. I wonder if I can do that in a Live session?

I filed a bug report.
Decided it was about time I familiarised myself with reportbug after using Sid for so many years. It baffled me first time I tried some time ago.
I had to actually install hollywood to report the bug. It works and is quite amusing, but curiously it doesn't play the mi.mp4 video on this system!

I have not been able to find if it is public domain. It may be, which would make CC moot.

It's not public domain at all. A Sony subsidiary owns the copyright to the music--no doubt about that. When I repackaged hollywood from the PPA for MX Linux before it made it into Debian, I replaced mi.mp4 with some CC-licensed music that I thought sounded similar.

The mi.mp4 file just has the audio, no video. IDK why the developer used that format, unless that's the file they got from archive.org.

Since the maintainer is also the developer, it will be interesting to see if they admit to the problem.

The file does have video, it's just an analyser display of the audio. It seems to be exactly the same audio as the file from archive.org, although archive.org does not have the video.

It appears that the offending mi.mp4 file has been removed in the latest update in Sid and testing, thanks to sunrat's bug report. But you'll now have to provide your own soundtrack.

I would argue that a DFSG copyright violation is sufficient cause for also fixing it in Stable, though. Another bug report?

It's good that the dev/maintainer has taken action. I'm guessing he went by the CC claim on archive.org and may have been unaware of the copyright status. (glass half full view )
