WINE:
It is assumed that wine is installed, but if it isn't you need to do the following, after installing wine:
Wine needs winecfg ran one time so that the hidden directory .wine is created in /home/user. If that
subdirectory exists, wine has been configured. Skip to 3A Below:

Code: Select all

winecfg
3A:
Once the .wine directory is built the configuration tool will start, and you can set a virtual desktop in the graphics tab if you wish.
Install the MFC42.dll from a Windows XP box, if it does not already exist, or install WineTricks.
You will need a native MFC42.dll in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 before the IrfanView install will work.

4. Copy the iview427.exe file to /home/user/.wine/drive_c, then install IrfanView with:

Code: Select all

cd /home/user/.wine/drive_c
cp /home/user/Downloads/iview427_setup.exe .
wine iview427_setup.exe
5. Delete the I_view32.ini file in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/IrfanView

6. Change the ICON by Right clicking on the Desktop Icon and then clicking on
the displayed ICON. Change to /usr/share/pixmaps/wine.svg
OR Download Irfanview.PNG
Other possible ICON choices are located at /usr/share/icons and lower subdirectories.....

7. Copy the setup_kadmos_irfanview_us.exe file to /home/user/.wine/drive_c, then install ocr_kadmos with:

Code: Select all

cd /home/user/.wine/drive_c
cp /home/user/Downloads/setup_kadmos_irfanview_us.exe .
wine setup_kadmos_irfanview_us.exe
8. Execute Irfanview, and configure the Language as ENGLISH, then check the box to "Load UNICODE Plugin",
then select OK.

9. Open a JPG file (Picture of a cookbook page) in Irfanview

10. Seclect OPTIONS -> START OCR....

11. When the OCR Window opens, select the Language as ENGLISH UK, then click on CONFIG, Click on the Button
SAVE IN..., and save in the Folder named Windows as file reConfig.ini. This will create the required configuration files.

12. From the OCR Window, click on MANAGE CLASSIFIERS & DICTIONARIES, Click on ENGLISH UK, then
Click on DOWNLOAD OTHER LANGUAGES, and Click on ENGLISH US, and six files will be downloaded.
These additional files will be saved in /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/IrfanView/Plugins/ocr_kadmos
as *.rec and en_US* files.

13. With the Language selected as ENGLISH US, and DICTIONARY as "no check" Left Click and Drag in the Left Panel,
to mark a square of the Text to OCR. A window will open with the recognized text. If your JPG is displaying two pages from
a cookbook, you will have to OCR each page individually, by selecting the page in the selected area, saving each
page before proceeding to the second portion.

[HOWTO] - Install IrfanView & OCR_KADMOS in Debian and OCR .PDF Pages.
Postby lkraemer » 2019-05-13 08:46

When you want to OCR a multipage .PDF document, you need some information about the PDF.

Typically , I extract all the .PDF Pages so I have pg_00, pg_01, pg_xx. Then, I look a single .PDF
page to get the settings. I just viewed one that has the following properties:
Width 831 pixels
Height 1171 pixels
Resolution 100 Pixels per inch
Most PDF files are either 72 or 100 DPI. That isn't much resolution, and will give poor results when you try to
OCR the page. I use the convert program included with Irfanview to increase the resolution, output a .tif file,
and prepare the .PDF page for scanning.

Code: Select all

convert -density 450 pg_0002.pdf -depth 8 pg_0002.tif
convert -density 450 pg_0003.pdf -depth 8 pg_0003.tif
If the page has an ALPHA Channel, I remove it from each *.tif image with GIMP, as necessary.

After that, I start Irfanview and open the first .tif file. I draw a box around the text I want to OCR.
Then, select the OPTION MENU and scroll down to KADMOS OCR. When the Text is displayed
I draw another box around the text I need OCR'd. A window pops up with the Text. This text must
now be saved. You are not able to edit the text at this point. Exit the OCR window and load the next
.tif file to process. When you are totally done processing the tif's, go back and edit each .txt file to
clean up the text. Irfanview should do 85-90% accurate OCR's. It produces better output than
Textbridge Classic 2.0, Tesseract 3.x, and other OCR programs I've tested.

Thanks.

why do we have to change the icons?

You don't have to change the Icon, assuming your system located and used the icon.
My Debian 9.x system didn't have an icon for the launcher.

Thanks.
