Debian 10 mininet install, high memory usage

#1 Post by jomba »

I always choose to install minimal debian on the older laptops, but now I decided to do also on my main laptop lenovo A485. The strange thing is that when I install minimal debian on for example IBM T23 it uses very little RAM memory. After clean install debian 9 minimal uses round 27Mb's and debian 10 minimal about 40Mb's, but when I installed the minimal debian (using the same ISO's) on my A485 the memory usage is much higher; debian 9 uses 130Mb's and debian 10 uses 185Mb's. The same is on lenovo A475 laptop.

My questios is, why on the modern laptop, minimal debian uses 4-4.5 time more memory? When I look in Htop I see nothing strange exept much more higher used RAM memory.

Answer is very simple, you don't know how to accurately monitor memory stats. I certainly call BS on this nonsense anyway. Have almost the entire time I've been using gnu/Linux done the minimal Debian netinstall route. What you're saying there is complete drek dude. This Stretch 32bit with Openbox and plenty of other stuff running on a 4gb-ram, dual-core Dell Inspiron 1545, Xorg etc etc all running, uses nothing like that, actually about 30+mbs less than what you're saying your install is pulling, just bare bones minimal. It's sub-100mbs @ boot idle. With networking and much else going.

Also same for 64bit Stretch (not much more than what you're supposedly seeing) bout 150mbs or so and now Buster also. These are full fleshed out and fledged OS's. Not sure how you're going about ascertaining your system overhead but it's horribly off. Good luck.

Though actually did think of a possible culprit, that being RAM reserved for your video/graphics perhaps ? Something like that ... dunno, still doesn't seem right, shrugs. Edit: In fact still seems all kinds of WRONG, more shrugs. So I could be wrong and apologize for the harshness of my other response. Spent A LOT of time learning to tweak all hades out of gnu/Linux and Debian minimal installs though. Resource miser in me saw what you posted and went ape-chit. :D

Thank you for your replay's. I just installed ps_mem utility and now it gets very intresting. Htop, top and even "free -m" shows about the same 124Mb RAM used, but ps_mem shows, that only 29Mb's of RAM is used.

free - m shows: used116mb and shared 8mb, so the problem is not with shared memory.

Can it be that htop, top and free apps has problems with AMD cpu's?

Dunno, really weird situation you have going there and nope type of cpu shouldn't mean anything in my view. Anyway ... enjoy the mystery, I have a good movie going on youtube. :D

PS, random after-thought, might want to run memtest or similar on that systems memory ? What you're saying, you're seeing ... makes absolutely no sense to me though. About the only thing I can think to suggest for ya. Hope everything turns out ok fellow nixer, good luck.

It looks like that the problems is with AMD APU's, in my case it's Ryzen 2500U. After some testing I see that on this laptop, debian creates dublicate processes. I have installed debian 10 + with graphical enviroment. With graphical enviroment debian uses 1.05gb or RAM :) This is about 4 times of what is should be.

I am using 4.19.67 kernel, maybe newer kernel would solve the problem. I am already using the latest bios of the laptop.

Face, ... meet palm. Which of course you choose Debian stable for that hardware ? Why wouldn't ya ? Lol ... dammit, shouldn't have taken the bait, not touching it, google is open 24/7. :P

I have a Ryzen 2500U and it doesn't use excessive RAM, even with the 4.19 kernel.

Thank you for your message. That's very good news.

I installed 5.2 and even 5.3 kernel, no differance... Not sure what I am doing wrong. If I look in the journalctl logs, I see "do_IRQ: 1.55 No irq handler for vercor" error messages. Tried already several solution that I found on the internet, but nothing helped. I guess this can be causing the problem. How you solved this problem? By the way what lapto do you have?

ThinkPad E485. I have to specify the bus addresses for the graphics card & sdcard reader (the IVRS table in the firmware is crappy) and suspend doesn't resume consistently but the memory usage is fine.

Was waiting/hoping you'd reply Hoas. Knew you have a Ryzen proc, am definitely not up to speed on such, though over the years read aplenty about related junk. Also noted several nixers in the Google serp's reporting issues with that chip. If you feel like sharing with OP/others, did you have to do any fiddling to get good results or just wham 4.19 kernel out of Debian repo's and good to go ? Pointless elaboration, personally though would be keeping a watchful eye on newer kernel release notes which list any improvements related to a-my cpu in particular. Associated microcode, firmware, potentially even oem uefi/bios updates they've put out (depending.)

Other than this stupidness, no more comment, blahblahblahblahblah. :) Good luck getting it sorted out OP.
PS, Head_on posted while I was rambling, lol. Would personally try out some newer kernel's etc. Am sure plenty much newer than v 4.19 are readily available in backports. More blahblah and blah.

^ Dude knows his stuff. :)

Custom compile FTW !!! Lol ... last several yrs have done so. Had a shiny newish cpu would be grabbing Debian source or upstream vanilla and going to town. :D Itching to fiddle with another on this old thing. Just use the current .config file and apply my special tweakage sauce. Have one custom job v. 4.19, from a former 64b Stretch install ... runs fine BUT takes 3hrs of compile time on this old beastie and can be a double-edged sword too folks. ie: I compiled out support for many filesystems I never intend to use ext2-3, ntfs, jfs etc etc and tons of other junk I have little interest in or use for. Someday may go to play with something and if don't remember what all was fiddled with it'd fail while using a custom kernel. Really just want to play with some key junk but unwilling to bother atm. Arghhh !!! :/

Oops ... OT: Not saying any such thing is necessary OP, isn't but Head_on has definitely given you some things to look into, to resolve your tech headaches. Check out apt-pinning, it's not all that complicated for real.
