SOLVED Using HD-media to do an install of 10.1 doesn't work

#1 Post by LoopBack »

Hello

I'm using Debian 9.8.0 at the moment which was installed using the hd-install media instead of burning an ISO DVD (to save plastic).
Now I've just tried to install: debian-10.1.0-i386-DVD-1.iso
with the latest hd-media:-
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stre ... ia/vmlinuz
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stre ... /initrd.gz
using exactly the same method again but the process has failed.

The install-syslog [extract] is:-

Code: Select all

On the one hand: it looks to me that a package is missing from the ISO-image;
but that would mean that nobody else at all has done an hd-install since the release which I find hard to believe.
However, on the other hand: It maybe that I have used the wrong installer image, especially as I had just the very same problem [& missing package] on the 10.0 release, though I let that go by.
Can anyone help please?

Cannot boot from a USB stick or use a DVD RW ?

These are files for the Debian 9 (stretch) installer.

Why don't you simply take the Buster hd-media vmlinuz+initrd.gz files to install Buster ??
buster/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/

+ if you have a good network speed, do you have something against Netinstall ?
kernel => linux
initrd => initrd.gz
buster/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/debian-installer/i386/

+ I presume you choose i386 on purpose.

[SOLVED] Using HD-media to do an install of 10.1 does not

#4 Post by LoopBack »

Thank you Very much, p.H, for your prompt help; and yours L_V but I was gone as soon as I saw the post from p.H, before you posted.

You are quite right, I should have used the installers in:-
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/bust ... /hd-media/

Quite why I was [clearly after all my agonized puzzling] never going to spot such an [otherwise obvious] mistake as that I cannot even begin to imagine.
Anyway: thank you, this is now Debian 10.1 and luckily I haven't buster-a-blood-vessel, yet; [though I have a couple of other potholes to resolve (one painful) that I shall post about].

p.H :-
I only have one USB stick that is bootable which is already loaded and in use. My other USB stick and cards cannot perform that function.
I read an article somewhere about this oddity and have since not dared to venture/gamble the money [how-many-times-?] to try to obtain another stick that is bootable.
I used to use DVD_RW but they Always scratched despite my best efforts to be careful. So HD-install it became.

L_V :-
I only have MobileBroadband, the cost is oppresive. I fetch the new ISOs on the infrequent occasions when I can get to a relative with a landline,
{I could not possibly do a Net-install during my visits}
{ the daily news is fetched with wget (as just the bare html page) avoiding all of the pictures, css scripts, etc; 500kB vs 7MB - Per Page!! }
As for i386, well I don't really know, I'm using an HP EliteBook 6930P.

The output of "lscpu" would be more informative about amd64 (x86_64) support.
