Cannot access ftp.debian.org

#1 Post by pythagorasmk »

I am trying to download some files from ftp.debian.org. I am using lftp. After lftp ftp.debian.org, I am trying to logon with "user anonymous <my email>". If I type "ls" I get "Connection refused" error. What I am doing wrong?

Don't know about "iftp", maybe try:
how to access ftp.debian.org
https://wiki.debian.org/ftp.debian.org
=========
ftp.debian.org is merely one of several servers that get updated from an
internal Debian server. That address is presently located on a single server
in the United States, and it still exists mainly for backwards
compatibility.

In the future, it may get services reduced, or shut down, or converted into
a globally load-balanced name, or whatever. Please don't use it.

I have read debian wiki and they suggest to use debian mirror. With the selected mirror everything is working fine. I don't know why ftp.debian.org is making problems???

I thought you would figure it out with the info I provided, but in any event, to be more clear, specific:

Kind of old news, but any way:
Shutting down public FTP services

April 25th, 2017

After many years of serving the needs of our users, and some more of declining usage in favor of better options, all public-facing debian.org FTP services will be shut down on November 1, 2017. These are:

ftp://ftp.debian.org
ftp://security.debian.org
Read the rest,in the above link your self for explanations as to why, and alternatives, etc.

I am absentminded. I am reading all night, sorry I don't have time to read all the articles.
Thanks for your answer.

your welcome

Ahh, ok , well in a nut shell, it was shut down, in 2017...I don't have time either to go go into writing all the reasons and details. It still can be accessed, but not the way you are trying to,and they (Debian.org) would really prefer that you don't use or try to use it. AS pointed out in the wiki:
https://wiki.debian.org/ftp.debian.org
don't use ftp.debian.org

Do not use ftp.debian.org, see :
