Error: The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 [..

#1 Post by plaf2000 »

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum.
I recently assembled a new PC (see below) and I wanted to use it as a server, so I decided to install a server version of debian (https://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst=> amd64).
When I try to install it, it shows an issue with missing drivers, but I don't know if this has something to do with the main problem. I also tried to put the CD with the drivers in (the one that comes with the motherboard), but nothing changed.

However, the main problem is another. In fact, when I select the partitions' configuration and I confirm, I always end up with the same error: The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 in SCSI11 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sdh) at / failed

What I would like to do is set a RAID0 for the 2 pairs of HDDs (4 in total) and install the OS on my M.2 SSD (see below). I'm able to install the OS on one of the for HDDs, but not on the SSD, I always end up with the same error. Here are some things I've tried:
  • Boot directly, without UEFI
  • Leave the 4 HDDs with freespace, not RAID0
  • Select the option "yes, format it"
  • Select all the mount option (for example "noatime")
I'm not sure whether my SSD is corrupted, or something else is wrong. I just would like to know it before I buy a new one.

I've some experience in Linux world, but I'm a newbie in the hardware world. And sorry if my English is not perfect :D

Thank you in advance!!

There is no server version of Debian. The netinst installer can install any kind of Debian system.

Missing firmware (not driver) for the Intel wireless network controller. Irrelevant.

What kind of partitioning do you choose, guided or manual ? I guess manual.
Can you show a screenshot of the partitioning stage, and the next screen where all actions are listed ?

I am surprised that the NVMe SSD is /dev/sdh. What are /dev/sda to /dev/sdg ? I guess sda to sdd are the SATA hard disks, but what about /dev/sde to /dev/sdg ? If they are USB drives or USB memory card readers, they should have been enumerated after any SATA drive.
Also, I am surprised that the message says "partition #1 (sdh)" instead of "sdh1".

Sorry, I didn't get the notification of your answer.
Anyway, thank you.
Yes, before the NVMe SSD there where two USB sticks (sdg and sdf), I've no idea why. However I managed to solve the problem simply by buying a new SSD.
Here's what happened.

After completely messing up the SSD I had (I tried with "dd" command from an installed os on another drive to the SSD and it gave me "in/out" errors everywhere), I bought a new one and now it works without any problem. No idea if I did something wrong while bulding up the pc/installing the OS or it was already defective.

In any case, this thread can be closed

I hope this can help someone :)
