debian 10 freeze at boot

#1 Post by arielvtpma »

Hello,

I have debian 10 with: core i5 4460, radeon r7 260x, 8GB Ram, Kernel 5.4, ssd 1tb (os), works fine.

I moved the ssd 1tb to a new buid: ryzen 7 3800x, radeon 5700xt, 16GB ram, freeze at boot.

Is there any solution other than reinstall debian 10 ?

Thanks in advance,

there probably is a solution, but we can't help you if you don't provide us with more details/logs...

On the other hand, I see you are switching to a Ryzen 7. The kernel Debian uses is known to have issues with it...

^ This. The stock Debian buster kernel doesn't support 3rd generation Ryzen. Boy am I sick of typing that...

So kernel 5.4.0-2 does not work?
After all these year using Debian, may be it is time to move to another linux os.

That's not the Debian stable kernel. If you're using that then you probably just need the non-free firmware & µcode.

EDIT: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... ults-Raven ← that's why Debian stable doesn't use the latest kernel.

[SOLVED]Re: debian 10 freeze at boot

#6 Post by arielvtpma »

Hey guys,

I solved the problem by installing new kernel 5.4.0-3 from sid/unstable. (now available)

This post is from debian 10 / kernel 5.4.0-3 (5.4.13-1) on my new build.

Thank you all for the replies.

I forgot to write that I was always able to boot to rescue mode with the nomodeset option. :-)

Adding the sid repositories to a stable system is a stupid idea: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=114130

Who are you calling stupid? How old are you ?
I am 51 years old.
I am in this forums only for solutions, not for qualifying some body as stupid.

Nobody. I said that adding sid was a "stupid idea", which even the most intelligent people can have from time to time.
