[SOLVED]wifi ok with a router, not ok with another

#1 Post by Robilio »

Hello,
I've successfully installed Debian 10 on my Mac-book 4.1 and wifi was working flawlessly until I tried to use it with a Huawei B535 router... With the previous router (TP-Link Archer D50) the WiFi 2.4 GHz has always worked fine.
With this router my laptop sees the WiFi wlan at 2.4 GHz, seems to connect without problems but actually it doesn't work: internet is down and also the local wlan is down because I can't reach the webpage of the router.

Code: Select all

attilio@Lap41:~$ sudo ifconfig

Additional information:
- With the wired connection all is ok.
- All other devices work without problem with the huawei router (desktop pc with kubuntu 19.10, android phone, apple ipad and iphone...)
- If I log in the router (with another device) I can see my laptop listed in the connected devices.
- I cannot ping anything but me; other devices cannot ping me.
- I've already factory reset the router

Can somebody help me?
Thank you all in advance,
bye R.

One thing to look at is the encryptation ciphers. ccmp(aes) is more secure than tkip but some older wifi cards only support tkip.
If your new router defaults to ccmp and your older MacBook is set for tkip it would result in what you are reporting.

You can go through the routers configuration to see how the cipher is set.

How you would specify the cipher in the macbook depends on what wifi managment you are using.

Thank you!
As soon as I get home I try with your suggestion, and let you know the result.

I've looked for the "cipher", "tkip" or "ccmp" in the router parametrs, but I can't find anything related...

I'm using kde now, with its network manager: where can I find this parameter?

Additionally (and I hope it helps), looking in the web I found this:

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
From here it seems that "Cell 1" (that is ESSID:"HUAWEI-B535-84B5") has "Group Cipher : TKIP" and this connection does not work; instead "Cell 2" (that is ESSID:"Infostrada-2.4GHz-E9765F") has "Group Cipher : CCMP", and it does work.
It seems that I really need to better specify this "cipher" for the huawei connection: where can I find it?

Thank you!

Re: wifi ok with a router, not ok with another

I do not use KDE or have a Huawei router so I can not give you details.

Prior to making changes to either the router or the MacBook, I would check the MacBook wifi card/model # and websearch to see if it has any issues, specifically with tkip/aes.
If it is one of those chips that does not support aes, your only option is to specify tkip in the Huawei router. Many routers can actually support both tkip and aes.

A web search found this on the Huawei router
[urlhttps://support.huawei.com/enterprise/en/doc/EDOC1000178120/bec17cc9/example-for-configuring-a-wpa2-psk-aes-security-policy][/url]

From the above page:
# Create the security profile wlan-security and set the security policy to WPA2-PSK-AES.
[AC-wlan-view] security-profile name wlan-security
[AC-wlan-sec-prof-wlan-security] security wpa2 psk pass-phrase a1234567 aes
[AC-wlan-sec-prof-wlan-security] quit
If the MacBook Chip supports aes then you should be able to look at, and provision, the ciphers in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.
The following example supports both aes and tkip.

Another option may be to replace the wifi card. Pulled cards can be had cheaply. Be aware that there are different form factors, antennae connections, possible bluetooth and bios whitelisting.

[SOLVED]Re: wifi ok with a router, not ok with another

#6 Post by Robilio »

Hello shep,
I'm back to tell you that you were right: googling for my MacBook wifi card/model # I've eventually found the solution to all my problems! :) :) :)
And the main reason was still the driver... I've understood it when (through a command that now I don't remember) I've seen that the active working driver was still "wl" and not "b43".
So, with the help of answer #2 posted by chili555 (https://askubuntu.com/questions/557348/ ... 4321-doesn) and a post by Hadaka (https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index. ... 27185.html), I "purged" both wl and b43 driver, re-installed b43 and blacklisted wl:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt remove --purge firmware-b43-installer
sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer
sudo -i
echo "blacklist wl" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
exit
I've done also this

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set US
sudo sed -i 's/^REG.*=$/&US/' /etc/default/crda
but I'm not sure it was necessary.

With this modifications now the wifi is working perfectly, with both routers.
Thank you all guys!
