I am new and I want to install google chrome. This works but is it safe? It is not in the original software list.

What do you mean with safe? Securitywise, or from a stability point of view?
In both cases it is not recommended installing .deb files directly from unofficial sources, but in the end you will have to decide for yourself if it's worth it...

The native Debian equivalent is Chromium.

As far as I know, Google may also restrict who is able to redistribute their packages. This may be a good thing, since that makes it harder for the bad guys to give you a bogus version, unless you routinely fell for those "update Flash Now to see this cool video!" malware tricks that used to be so prevalent.

I thought debian would provide security fixes on the current stable package and not provide a new package from upstream ....

I think it turns out to be a lot less trouble to backport a new version then it is to refactor security fixes into the older code, but that's just my guess.
