Wireless usb adapter not showing on Debian stretch

#1 Post by jlion »

I only have access to the internet through an unlimited 4g phone hotspot. I have tried to download on my windows laptop and transfer drivers to the linux desktop via USB thumbsticks, but no success. So I went and bought a Netgear Wireless AC Adapther AC600 dual band with model no. A6100. I would appreciate if ya'll have any links/tips and tricks because the Debian installation does not recognize the adapter and I dont have ethernet. Thanks in advance!

Downloading drivers is a Windows thing, the Linux kernel already includes almost every driver you will ever need. But Debian stable's kernel is getting old now and it doesn't include drivers for devices introduced after January 2019, newer kernels are available from the buster-backports repositories: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=139003

But almost all wireless devices need non-free firmware, which is not included in the official Debian releases: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=142808
