Openbox-session not working with lightdm

#1 Post by steve1961 »

Hi

I’ve installed openbox on my Debian 10 System and I’m having a problem logging in with lightdm. By default lightdm calls on the openbox.desktop file in /use/share/xsessions which uses the openbox-session command. This just dumps me back to the login screen. If I modify to desktop file so that the exec is just openbox it all works. However, only openbox-session parses the .config/openbox/autostart file so none of my custom commands in this file are run. Any idea how to resolve the situation so that the default openbox-session command works?

Do you need a DM? What happens if you just use startx?

I’d prefer to use a DM as I have mate on this system as well so would need to set up a default xsession in a .xinitrc file for startx to work. I also have lightdm customised to my liking

Arch Linux has a comprehensive wiki on lightdm. It includes session management and trouble shooting

If you don't know what the problem is then how do you know what's relevant?

You should also post the *full* content of the openbox autostart (& environment) file(s). And check if this works from a console login:

Code: Select all

startx /usr/bin/openbox-session
If it doesn't then the problem isn't with the display manager at all.

Oh and don't use LightDM, it runs X as root. If you must use a display manager then switch to GDM instead, that runs X under the normal user.

Been so long can't remember config lightdm. Though would look for the lightdm.conf file something like "locate lightdm.conf" in term dig through that puppy for an appropriate place to slap openbox-session. Would also try this first to see whatcha get.

"sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" if openbox-session is already there (think it is, can't remember)select it and reboot, I'd be default x-session. If not got a how 2 up on autologin + startx in tips tricks that shows how to install something like Openbox to x-session-manager so it can be selected. Just general thoughts for ya.

Also you'll have to excuse Head_on, he's a cyborg and you know how impatient those can get when data isn't provided. Hey wait Hoas, are you a cyborg or an android? :P

Please post the content of ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log immediately after a failed startx launch.

Note that the autostart & environment files don't need to be executable and they should have some lines that aren't commented-out if you want to run things from them.

Lol Head_on. :)

Yep it's telling when you see things like "I've got xyz really setup how I like it". Surely means much config fiddling has been done and gawds know what all/how the person went about it. Though one of the greatest joys in gnu/nix in my view. Hacking hades out of config files and system, till you get it doing whatcha want. Of course have to stick as close to best practices as possible. Guess I really should be using an .xsession file here rather than xinitrc but found out some graphical interfaces just don't like it. Crazily considering setting up a dummy symlinked xinitrc arrangement so all things are covered. Ah but then someone can have both without problems anyway.

+1 Head_on, an autostart file with nothing set to start in it isn't much good unless that's what x-nixer wants. Openbox has always been extremely well behaved, it's popular enough that it's received enough developer attention and userbase that it's top of class in windows managers in my view. Never had issues however trying to start it, dm, including lightdm, xinitrc or setting it default x-session directly. None of this helps if someone messes up their dm configs though.

Thanks for the advice so far. The autostart and environment files have nothing in them because I've not managed to launch openbox-session yet, only openbox as the wm for the Mate DE.
Tried again with startx after disabling lightdm. Here's the log immediately after the fail:

Re: Openbox-session not working with lightdm

#14 Post by Deb-fan »

Did you try setting it as default x-session? Then simply using startx at login. Might try checking what it's/openbox is set as in update-alternatives --config x-window-manager too. Though what's set default x-session overrides that. If were using it as default wm, no idea what lightdm would set it to. Surely not openbox-session. Though should still work with startx + full path I guess. Would check what's set anyway. Wondering how you went about all this lightdm config'ing, what all/how you set ob to be Mate's wm? Your situation is a head scratcher to me. Never had issues like those and started openbox tons of ways. Gdm, slim, nodm, lightdm, without a DM via xinitrc and update-alternatives. Time being using an xinitrc file ( just has an exec openbox-session line in it I uncomment when wanting to use OB) and exec'ing the startx cmd from the .profile file in my users /home. Only reason I've switched back to using an xinitrc file is fluxbox wouldn't behave without one.

What I see is text as it starts to launch a session and then it just dumps me back to the prompt without an error message. No right click menu, just a TTY. I'm using openbox successfully on Arch and Ubuntu so not sure what is going on here. As a test I installed Debian again in a virtual machine and that also worked fine with my standard lightdm.conf . I have it set up as the default x-session.

I can launch openbox with the openbox command but not the openbox-session command. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a few times but no difference

Hi, I’m tearing my hair out trying to figure this one out. Someone asked me to see if I could set up mate to use openbox as the default wm and it worked well. When I came to try openbox on it’s own though it wouldn’t launch openbox-session. I’ve set mate back to the default wm so that shouldn’t cause issues and although I’ve customised lightdm with my own image it works fine on arch, Ubuntu and even another instance of Debian so I’m not sure what’s screwed up with this installation. If I hadn’t got it just as I want it I’d reinstall but I’m trying to avoid that

Here you go

Code: Select all

steve@steve-pc:~$ file $(which -a openbox-session)
/usr/bin/openbox-session: POSIX shell script, ASCII text executable
/bin/openbox-session: POSIX shell script, ASCII text executable

Does the content match this:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

if test -n "$1"; then
    echo "Syntax: openbox-session"
    echo
    echo "See the openbox-session(1) manpage for help."
  exit
fi

# Clean up after GDM
xprop -root -remove _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS \
      -remove _NET_DESKTOP_NAMES \
      -remove _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP 2> /dev/null

# Set up the environment
A="/etc/xdg/openbox/environment"
test -r $A && . $A
A="${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-"$HOME/.config"}/openbox/environment"
test -r $A && . $A

# Run Openbox, and have it run the autostart stuff
exec /usr/bin/openbox --startup "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openbox-autostart OPENBOX" "$@"
Do you have /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openbox-autostart? Or /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/openbox-autostart if you have a 32-bit system.

I presume you've already tried

Code: Select all

# apt reinstall openbox
The fact that it works fine for me and also works for you in a VM strongly suggests that something is wrong with your installation. Have you added any foreign sources?
