Brand new to Debian, can't get it set up?

#1 Post by brandNewGuy »

Hi all,

Apologies if this is a very stupid question. I am brand new to Debian and can't seem to get set up in VirtualBox.

Basically, when I start the OS I end up on a terminal page (I tried to attach but can't) which just says "

Debian GNU/Linux 10 MyName ttyi
MyName login:

I can enter my login etc but can't figure out how to login to the OS after that.

Can anybody help me get set up here?

Thanks all, have a good weekend.
John.

Enter your login name, press <return> then enter your password and press <return> again. TTY ftw!

EDIT: I initially misread your thread title and didn't see the word "set", you nearly got a viagra link...

Yeah, that's the way I like it, baby.

What did you want to happen? For a graphical desktop try

Code: Select all

# tasksel
Did you not see that screen in the installer? Which ISO image did you use (URL link preferred)?

Hey,
I downloaded from this link:
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... 64/iso-cd/
debian-10.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso

I've run that image *many* times and it always shows the tasksel screen for me.

Here it is:

Image

^ That's from the exact image you have linked.

Anyway just run the tasksel command from the console, as I suggested.

For netinst.iso, that is what you should get.
try live-cd.iso, which is the most friendly image for newbie.
