Debian 9 Stretch 9.12 + Lenovo Thinkpad T420 (Restarted why)

#1 Post by BrandonKastning »

Hey everything,

I love Debian 9 and have been using it on my Thinkpad T420 for close to 2 years now. I haven't had many problems and most certainly not the one I experienced this morning after waking up to my laptop not logged in and having a GPU/CPU overheat / dump / crash by viewing dmsg.

Would like to know if anyone could point me in the right direction so that I can troubleshoot this so it doesn't happen in the future. College starts in another 2 weeks and I need to be all setup smooth!

Thanks!

Below is some of the dmsg :

Have you tried clearing out the fan & vents? That made a massive difference for my 10-year-old X201.

Try to open the notebook and clear the cooler, in the worst you can get a new cooler unit cheap from AliExpress for the T420.

Head_on_a_Stick,

Do you feel those error messages match it being physically needing thermal and cleaning?

A lot of mentions about USB/sdb in that dmesg output. Do you have an external USB drive? Was it attached when this happened or was it not attached and perhaps was supposed to be? Had some backup scheduled or something? Just 2 cents but wouldn't want to go digging around inside a laptop, contemplating reapplying thermal paste etc before considering other things. That's taking it a bit too far without more to indicate that's the likely culprit or solution. Really doesn't at all sound like it to me. If it were that bad it's unlikely to be a once in blue moon deal, you'd be experiencing thermal problems more frequently, surely wouldn't just overlook that type of thing etc.

Deb-fan,

Thank you for that observation sir. I most certainly did have a USB drive hooked up and I may have been moving files or at least moved some backup files and it finished and I never removed the drive mount.

I since have removed it and nothing has kicked me out of X (LXDE) so far.

I wonder if it's my USB dongle that is having difficulties. I ran into a problem with one of my USB 2.5 drive hookups and it had power issues (I forgot the exact details because it happened so long ago).

Thank you for asking that. I will keep an eye out now.

^ Welcome, no geek wants to see another techie in a serious hardware related scare. Clearly a nice system, never heard anything but positives about Thinkpads that I can recall. You've been running smooth for a couple years already no reason you shouldn't keep that up for plenty more. Vaguely remember having seen a person with a similar situation long ago, external USB, wasn't umount'ed-ejected or whatever, some massive disk i/o kicked in and all hades broke loose with him assuming the worst for the PC. Ended with no harm done and no doubt a gnu/Linux user who was more cautious about what was left plugged in too long unattended. :P

Edit: Just safe side would fsck that external hard drive. Would like to know the root cause. Can't remember if anyone ever got to the bottom of that former situation either. End up having to blame it on Gremlins or something. Do think some power management was involved there as well. Kinda like after being left a long time the drive went to sleep and refused to wake up. I mean it wasn't damaged just wrecked havoc for awhile. Too much coffee here, ah. :)

Deb-fan:

I took your advise and ran a fsck with the following positive results:

Code: Select all

root@dragon:/home/brandon# fsck /dev/sdb
fsck from util-linux 2.29.2
e2fsck 1.43.4 (31-Jan-2017)
TARGET_DOWN: clean, 208022/45793280 files, 40358362/183143645 blocks
I moved the USB drive over to my T430 (which isn't as nice as the T420 due to low end resolution and extremely thin hard drives which makes it most difficult to find compatible 2.5 hard drives in my own inventory).

Stay healthy, be safe and God bless,

Brandon Kastning

I appreciate your help sir.

Perhaps you could install s-tui and monitor your CPU to see how hot it's really getting under stress. If you read its man page, you can even get it to record to a log file, too.

Many modern multicore processors do thermal throttling under stress as a matter of normal operation--I've written in other threads here about reducing that safely with undervolting on my two laptops.

Wanted to wedge a cool infobit but didn't want to start a thread for it. Glad Stevep revived this as it's appropriate.

Good command for checking block devices, plug in USB drive use "lsblk" cmd to find out what's it's called, ie: My ext2 formatted thumb drive is sdc, 1st partition on it is sdc1 and path/Mt point for it is then /dev/sdc1 now cool cmd. I can get mucho info about it with ...

Code: Select all

sudo tune2fs -l /dev/sdc1
Tells me a ton of useful info. When the filesystem was created, last time it's been checked for errors a crapton of stuff. Repeatedly improperly mounting/umounting a drive can clearly result in issues too. When was dualbooting w anything windows still opted for safe vs sorry with windows formatted stuff, would use Windows to chkdsk them. Only a precaution, gnu/Linux and any quality disk util/tools shouldn't have a problem regardless. Not that matters was ext4 here anyway. Wanted to shoe-horn that dorkishness in though. :)
