headphones not being picked up

i am using debian sid on my imac with alsa.

when i plug in headphones, the sound continues through the speakers. how can i get them picked up?

Or just scroll over to the "Auto-Mute Mode" column in alsamixer and enable it.

thanks.

the sound at least stops playing through the speakers when i insert the headphones. however no sound is coming through the earphones.

Have your headphones ever worked or is this a recent change?

And are these USB headphones or do they use standard jack connectors?

i hardly used headphones on this computer before the whole wfh thing. i run debian on it 95%+ of the time and i know i have used headphones. but i cannot honestly say the rare times i used them (and i reckon this could easily be under 10 times) was not in the 5%

if there is nothing that is immediately obvious, i think let it be.

i will probably install pulseaudio jut to see if there is any difference.
