Because there have been multiple posts about using the mach/hurd kernel on Debian, maybe this is of interest to some here:

Shouldn't you have posted this on the 1st of April?
Good one though...

Re: GNU actually deprecates linux on GUIX
Multiple commentators have pointed out that despite this occurring on Arpil first, there actually appears to be real work on the branches in the repository etc. Although, I do admit that I have not had time to verify any of that myself
EDIT:
the summary page lists hurd branch change 4 days ago here:
https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/
it has some commits
https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix. ... h=wip-hurd
fairly low activity though

Is that not just part of their work to support Hurd?pylkko wrote:there actually appears to be real work on the branches in the repository
Anyway GUIX is a bit of a dead-end (IMO), all the trendy types use Nix these days.

Re: GNU actually deprecates linux on GUIX
I thought guix was a fork of nix Just with support for gnu shepherd. I have an install so in their irc channel and I seem to recall someone booting hurd. Because a lot of Hurd development is on Debian Hurd I saw there was talk of Debian Guix packages. All very interesting stuff imo.

Re: GNU actually deprecates linux on GUIX
If we take the notice that they pass with face value and presume that it is not a joke (April fools), there they say specifically that while they have developed the package manager in the past with support for both their deblobbed linux kernel (linux libre) and the sing Hurd since 2017 in the guix and possibly the SD distribution. They from now on wish to only "officially" support hurd et al. and not linux. The linux support wont be dropped, just deprecated and not maintained. It might be a sign of the fact that they 1) do no want to maintain multiple distinct kernels and 2) decided to specialize in a more narrow niche where other players aren't playing, so to speak

Re: GNU actually deprecates linux on GUIX
While there apparently was a big thread on guix-dev about Hurd (I've not read it) They're a very long way off dropping Gnu/linux joke or not.

Re: GNU actually deprecates linux on GUIX
The HURD micro-kernel architecture offers few interesting features - for Me, the most interesting is this one:
Computer_bought_the_farm
Besides that, since open source GFX drivers are about to be as good as the closed-source versions, I think that in few years the HURD kernel may indeed become a real alternative to Linux kernel.
Of course, binary firmware blobs are still a problem...

Re: GNU actually deprecates linux on GUIX
the first hurd image is out now:
https://guix.gnu.org/download/latest/
and as you can see it is a virtual machine image...
A lot of confusion comes from the fact that in the beginning they called the package manager GUIX, and the operating system GUIX SD. Then they started calling the OS GUIX System. So basically now people are confusing the two and hard to know when they mean their "functional package manager" or the OS.
