Helping a friend install debian on their laptop. Downloaded two different isos:
1. debian-live-10.3.0-amd64-mate+nonfree.iso
2. firmware-10.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso
Booted iso 1 and confirmed I can connect to wifi, sound works, etc.
Repacked iso 2 with preseed.cfg. Booted from that. I get the error "No ethernet card detected". This message is false, as confirmed with iso 1. Booted from a stock iso 2 and have the same issue.
How do I resolve this issue? I would prefer to not have to do a full manual installation, that's what I've spent all this time on preseed.cfg for. Does "firmware-10.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso" not come with the firmware despite saying that it does?
Scheduled Maintenance: We are aware of an issue with Google, AOL, and Yahoo services as email providers which are blocking new registrations. We are trying to fix the issue and we have several internal and external support tickets in process to resolve the issue. Please see: viewtopic.php?t=158230

This is from the non-free netinstall image:
I don't have the MATE non-free image but you can just mount it and list the contents like this:

Re: No ethernet card detected
The contents of "debian-live-10.3.0-amd64-mate+nonfree.iso" firmware dir looks like:
Thanks to your help, I realized that the contents of "firmware" for the live cd and the netinst are not identical. I hoped that I could simply copy over all the firmware from the live cd when repacking, so I just did that now. This is the contents of the firmware dir after my repack:
But that unfortunately didn't work. How do I fix this?
Thank you!

Re: No ethernet card detected
My apologies, I'm not sure what information that page has that is useful here?
The "live + firmware" cd works perfectly, but the netinst is missing some firmware files. I copied all the firmware over from the "live + firmware" cd to the netinst, but it still chokes.
How do I convince the netinst installer to use the entire contents of "firmware"?
More to the point, why does the contents of "firmware" differ between these two cds?
I realize that as a workaround I can do a manual installation, but I normally use a preseed to automate a bunch of work for me (and more importantly, so I don't have to keep checking on it)
Is there a way I can still use preseed here?

Re: No ethernet card detected
It explains how to load firmware from a USB stick.kerryhall wrote:I'm not sure what information that page has that is useful here?
Or you can use live-build to make your own ISO image containing whatever you want (including a preseed configuration file), see the github page linked in my signature for an example of how to do this.
