Radeon 9200 pro DEBIAN 9 fails to load firmware

#1 Post by basic69 »

Hello.
My first question ever.
I MUST use an old computer HP VECTRA 420 MT. In these times of corona one PC for each in the family :(
I installed DEBIAN 9.
I have only one problem with the video adapter RADEON 9200 PRO.
I can use only a frequency of 60 hz. I think it can do better.
At boot I read this message:
firmware: failed to load radeon/R200_cp.bin (-2)
[ 11.419581] radeon 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/R200_cp.bin failed with error -2
Can you help me?
Thank you
B69

Hello.
Thank you.
Now I haven't anymore error on boot (see below output of dmesg and lspci), but my display is always 1024x768 at 60 hz (and I can't modify it).
Resolution is ok (I have an old SONY Multiscan 200sf), but refresh is low.
I read a lot of posts about kernel configuration, grub configuration and xconf configuration (I haven't it)
What I did:
insert "radeon.dpm=1" in grub file
try to edit xorg.conf, but I haven't it!?!?! So in recovery mode I wrote "Xorg -configure". I had some error (/var/log/Xorg.0.log)
Anything to suggest?
Thank you very much.

Hello.
I read to unistall "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" from Synaptic.
It seems for nvidia.
What do you think?
Thank you.

What is the expected refresh rate for that monitor? Did you use the 'xrandr' command to check the available modes?

You can generate a custom modeline if the monitor isn't providing the one you want: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xr ... esolutions

Don't use that, it's obsolete.

That won't help, it's not being used for your system.

Hello everyone.
I expected 85-90 Hz as in my old winXP.
AND IN FACT WITH YOURS HELP NOW EVEN IN DEBIAN I HAVE IT.
I followed your link at archilinux...
The only change I did it is the resolution/freq (I choosed 1024x768 at 85 Hz) and the name of the adapter (for my system is VGA-0 and not VGA-1).
I write every command to help others newbie like me.
THANK YOU GUYS EVEN FROM MY EYES.

Hello HoaS!
One thing more. Please"
After reboot I had to retype all.
Have I to edit which config file?
I cant find the directory said in xrandr guide!
"/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/" and its file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf"
Thank you.

On this one occasion you are allowed to create the directory and file yourself, I promise I won't tell anybody...

If you have problems with the X.Org configuration file then it is possible to add the xrandr commands to ~/.xsessionrc instead, that file will be read whenever you start an X session. And no, that doesn't exist either. Yet.
