Black login screen and cannot startx after Buster installati

#1 Post by skipperx »

Hello:

I have been pulling hair for a few days on this and hoping someone can help me sort it out.

It is a fresh install of Buster in an Asus UX31A laptop that is a few years old. It has Intel graphics. I have tried installing Buster with XFCE, Cinnamon, and Mate, one DE at a time and got the same results. Black screen with a blinking cursor on the top left corner. I can go to tty screens and login from command line and try to startx. X fails to start. I have installed firmware-misc-nonfree and intel-microcode and still have the same results. I checked and saw xserver-xorg-video-intel is also there.

Currently, I installed it with Mate and LXDE. Still the same results.

Stretch was running fine on the same machine before.

Here is the information that I thought might be relevant. I would appreciate some help.

Thank you.

I have had a similar problem with intel graphics on Buster, you could try the solution that worked for me in this post and to add to that post, the xorg.conf.new might actually be in root folder (/root/xorg.conf.new) and not your current folder

@OP or @Dai_trying: would it be possible to see the full X.org configuration file?

There was a similar problem over on the Arch forums that was solved by using the Intel DDX driver instead of the modesetting driver and I would be interested to know if the auto-generated file does this.

I did not change grub for no modesetting. My grub settings are

Thanks!

@skipperx, does your graphical desktop still work if you replace the contents of the X.org configuration file with this stanza by itself?

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card0"
   Driver "intel"
   BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
@Dai_trying, if you could also try a skimmed-down version and report back that would be fantastic.

Just going to test the skimmed version now and will report back.

EDIT: Yes that worked fine, I'm just going to reboot now without an xorg.conf file just to test if this error is still occuring (i can't remember if there has been any kernel updates since my install) and will report that too.

EDIT #2: The problem does still exist and so placed the skimmed xorg.conf file back and restarted lightdm and everything rosy. :D

Yes, the skimmed xorg.conf still does the job and I am keeping it.

Thank you.

OK, thanks folks.

This problem is caused by the modesetting DDX driver and so a bug should be reported against the xserver-xorg-core package.

I can't do this myself because I've switched to AMD hardware so if either of you two could open one it would help improve the quality of the stable release.

I had previously reported this as a bug against the kernel as it happened to me after a kernel update although I don't recall if the xserver-xorg-core package was also updated at that time, I have sent an update to that and will wait to see if it can be changed or I need to submit a new bug report.

Re: Black login screen and cannot startx after Buster instal

Hello,

today i tried to upgrade my system from stretch with xfce to buster with xfce and i'm having the same problem. After the installation finishes and the system starting to reboot, i can't see anything but a black screen with a blinking cursor.

My system is a i386 pentium d, with motherboard asus P5L-MX. I don't have additional graphic card, only what the motherboard has.

I tried the procedure with the new xorg.conf file, but unfortunately after the last command "sudo service lightdm start" the problem remains the same.

I also found this bug report, which i'm not sure if it is relevant and if it is safe to do that.

I saw in a previous post of mine that i had a similar problem with GUI, when i upgraded to stretch. Today when i'm logging in as a root or as a user and i'm typing startx, i can see GUI but it has no icons in the xfce menus. I tried to open xfce-screenshooter but i can't.

Any suggestion what should i do?

Thank you

Do you have an Intel graphics card and is the xserver-xorg-video-intel package installed?

Don't run startx as root. Ever.

Probably best to reset the permissions in $HOME:

Code: Select all

# chown -R $user:$user /home/$user # replace $user with the actual user name

Hi everyone!

I'm having the same issue with the xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted) message when starting X with startx after an update to Buster from Strecth without any desktop environment. (I'm using the concerned PC as a MythTV backend in order to access the TV cards within it.)

After following some advices grabbed from here, here or here.
Startx works well with sudo.

I'm wondering if the issue has to deal with permissions and what I can do.

Here are some information below about my configuration and received messages.

That's far too vague, please post exactly what you have done.

*Never* do that. The permissions in $HOME are now b0rked so you will have to run the chown command in my last post to fix them.

Why are you booted with the kernel from Debian jessie?

Have you even read the rest of the thread? Remove that and try the snippet I posted earlier. But only try that once you've figured out how to run with the buster kernel. Go through the official release notes and check the upgrade guides because you're obviously doing it wrong.

That shows a normal session with no errors.

Thanks for the quick reply. The only thing that I kept was to generate a new xorg.conf file and to put it in /etc/X11/. I also tried to change the AccelMethod to uxa in xorg.conf as I read in an other post that someone solved the same problem thanks to this (with the same xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted) message), but canceled my change. I also tried to add the BusID (PCI:0:2:0) in the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.20-intel.conf file (even if it is not supposed to be changed).

I've aldready read this several times. But it was just to check if the permissions were involved and my machine is not a critical one. I also read that you can now start a session without being root.
Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Why are you booted with the kernel from Debian jessie?
I learn that I'm running a kernel from Jessie while I'm reading you! So, I don't know. It might be due to the fact that I upgraded my system from Wheezy these last days (edit: and to the fact that this is an LTS version). But I didn't want nor ask to keep an old kernel.

Yes, I've read the whole thread. About the snippet, do you mean the below command? If this is the case, I wanted to understand what exactly the problem was in order to avoid "playing" with the permissions. During my upgrades, I followed and read the release notes and the upgrade guides. I've read what problems could happen but did'nt think my system was concerned. So, I'm focusing now about the kernel version.

Code: Select all

# chown -R $user:$user /home/$user # replace $user with the actual user name

Good to read. :) But why then is there this xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted) message? I hope that I don't bother you with my question but only want to understand things. Is this something that one doesn't need to worry about?
Anyway, thanks for your answer to someone unexperienced to Debian who I am. :)

If you want to alter that file copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and edit it there instead. Do that and remove the xorg.conf you have added, most of that file is unnecessary and may be causing problems.
Julius22 wrote:About the snippet, do you mean the below command?
No, I was referring to the small X.Org configuration file containing just a single stanza. Copying and editing /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.20-intel.conf should do the job though.
Julius22 wrote:But why then is there this xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted) message?
Sorry, I missed that bit. I think we need to get you running with the buster kernel, the error might be related to your old kernel (but I don't really know for sure).

@Head_on_a_stick
Thanks for the precisions.
You were right about ther kernel issue. Thanks again for pointing it! :D
After installing the linux-image-686 package, the 4.19.0 kernel was installed and, after a reboot, mythwelcome was started automatically with no obvious problem with the X server. So, I can now go on with the other things I need to reconfigure. And to begin, another upgrade (but this time with Trisquel; on my main backend) in order to have a good match between the MythTV versions of my two machines…
