amd cz-da7219-max98357a sound driver ??

#1 Post by deaton2 »

I am using linux Mint debian edition. After quite a bit of work by an expert on their forum I thought I would try here since it appears a driver is not included in the kernel.

Background: I have an AMD A4 based Acer Chromebook which is running a replacement firmware by mr.chromebox which allowed me to just install linux to it. I initially installed linux mint 19.3 but sound wasn't working. After some discussion on the mint forum it was suggested I install the linux mint debian edition. I did that and the problem persists. The sound is not working.

In mint 19.3 sound settings showed 2 output devices - 1 for hdmi via the R6 video (I have no hdmi port) and another for the sound "chip" on the board. This second device was always disabled and I could not get it enabled. After much research by people on the mint forum and myself it appears there is no current driver for the sound. I was pointed to https://code.woboq.org/linux/linux/soun ... 57a.c.html as the driver not yet in the kernel. Is there some way to build this as a loadable module?

Some outputs I hope are helpful:

Code: Select all

    dave@davecb:~$ lspci | grep Audio
00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 15b3
00:09.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Carrizo Audio Dummy Host Bridge
    dave@davecb:~$

Code: Select all

    dave@davecb:~$ uname -vnn
    davecb #1 SMP Debian 5.4.19-1~bpo10+1 (2020-03-09)
    dave@davecb:~$
This output is from mint 19.3, NOT the current lmde, but it does show the 2nd audio device even though it didn't work:

Code: Select all

    dave@dave-test-linux:~$ aplay -l

Please note that I am not an experienced or knowledgeable user. I followed other instructions and mr.chromebox to get linux installed on this Chromebook.

If it makes any difference it is an Acer CB315-2HT-47WG.

Thank you for any help you may provide.

Also see lsmod output, was found sound module for this card or not. And try find your sound card in linux-headers,

Code: Select all

grep -r your_card /usr/src/linux-headers-`uname -r`/drivers
your card may be cz-da7219-max98357a or it part.

The headers are not installed for the kernel I am running. I originally had a lower kernel version which came on the dvd I used to installed - linux-headers-4.19.0-8-amd64. After installation I was told to update to a higher kernel for Debian. That's how I ended up with 5.4.0-0.bpo.4-amd64. Not knowing what the heck I'm doing I just followed other's instructions. I know it left something messed up because when I try to do certain things with apt-get or synaptic I get a bunch of messages about duplicate repositories or some such thing.

Any idea what I should do? Should I reinstall from the DVD I downloaded and not touch anything and then post back here?

Thanks! I really don't know much of anything so bear with me!

Wipe the HD , and download a Debian image, use that. That is what I did years ago, Linux Mint simply did not work.

That derivative is not supported here, which is why your last post was moved to the Offtopic section. Please go away and don't post any more copies of this query.

More than a little rude - you could have told me you moved it and why instead of just doing it. And just go away???????? Fine. Delete my account. Don't need rude people when I'm just an inexperienced user looking for help. Thanks for absolutely nothing but a BIG sour feeling in my mouth about ever wanting anything to do with Debian again!

I wasn't rude at all, I even said "please". I think you're being far too sensitive.

I didn't move it, I'm not a moderator or an admin. I just sweep spam posts into the dustbin, that's all.

But you are not using Debian are you ?

I am using linux Mint debian edition.
So really you never had anything to do with Debian to start with.
Since you are not using Debian, logic would say, go back to the Linux Mint forum where you belong.

You should also read:
so we now have 2 identical posts, :
And the forum guidelines say: Forum guidelines. Please read before first post!
Sadly nobody ever reads the READ first messages,.topics, like they should, any way it says:

Forum guidelines. Please read before first post!

Before you start using Debian User Forums, please observe the following guidelines:

1. Do not cross post. Posting the same topic in more than one category only creates confusion and makes it hard to keep track on the various replies. Double posts will be locked.
Be descriptive. Use a meaningful headline and try to make your question as clear as possible. Include as much information as possible such as what Debian branch you are using, error messages, what you did that may have caused the problem etc. This greatly increase the chances of getting useful help.
Be patient. Not everyone knows everything and not everyone is online all the time. If you don't get a reply chances are that no one is online that knows the answer at the moment. Do not 'bump' your questions just because there have been a few hours with no reply.
Do not post a reply to obvious SPAM. If the forums are getting severely spammed and no moderators are online please use the spam reporting thread or send an e-mail to team@forums.debian.net
Be polite. Remember that the skill level of the forum members ranges from the absolute beginner to the very seasoned Linux user and what might be obvious to you might be very hard to understand for others. It's OK to point someone to other resources or suggest means of learning but do so politely; 'RTFM' has no place on this board.
Do not engage in flame wars. Threads that evolve into flaming will be locked. If you feel attacked; be the better person and ignore it. The moderators are not omnipresent, so if you feel some actions need to be taken please e-mail the moderator team on team@forums.debian.net
Stay on topic. Sometimes threads morph into something completely off topic, this is unavoidable when a bunch of people communicate. However, try to limit the off topic discussions to the off topic category. Long off topic discussions in other categories might get moved or locked.
Discussions in "Off topic" should still be in the spirit of this board, that is related to Linux/ Computers/ Software etc. Political, religious or racial discussions do not belong on this board.
Avoid 'thread hijacking'. Unless your question is directly related to the thread's topic, start a new one.
As a rule we do not accept commercial content. If you'd like to offer your Debian related services for money or you are offering a paid job please e-mail team@forums.debian.net first and it will be considered on a case by case basis.
The language on this board is primarily English but we do not exclude people with little or no English. When replying to posts in other languages please include an English translation. It's a good idea to help non-English speakers find resources in their language.
A forum is a means of written communication so make sure your posts are as readable as possible. That means: Use capital letters and punctuation, and use the formatting features of the forum wisely in order to make your post attractive. Try to avoid 'l33t speak', 'chatspeak,' and 'SMS language'.
There is no need to apologize for poor English skills. We have users from all over the world and trying your best is more than adequate.
Moderators might move your thread to a more suitable category (for instance from 'General Discussion' to 'General Questions'). This is no cause for alarm and a shadow topic, linked directly to the new location, will always be left at the original location.
If you feel like your post/ thread has been locked, edited or even removed in error please contact the moderator team via e-mail at team@forums.debian.net.

Edit 10.18.08: #4 Spam reporting
So actually , seems to me this topic should be locked/closed, or moved to off topic, along with the other. since there is a copy, the first post the OP made, here: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=146135
Then apparently, posted again here, after it was moved to off topic, so talk about who is being rude,..If the op had read the Read first, they would have known not to post it again.....

If you feel like your post/ thread has been locked, edited or even removed in error please contact the moderator team via e-mail at team@forums.debian.net.
Is what they should have done, instead of getting rude, and accusing others of being rude,... "sheesh some people" (don't know who said it, but really )
