Nvidia and other problems in HP laptop and Debian 10

Hi to Everybody,

I've just installed Debian 10 with LXQT Desktop on my quite new HP laptop 15-dw0004nl (Intel i5 and Nvidia Geforce MX110 plus Intel UHD620 integrated video card).

I've solved the problems with the wifi adapter (RTL8821CE), but not with the graphic cards.

I've installed the Nvidia drivers following an official Debian tutorial, but they don't work.

If I do in the terminal nvidia-xconfig, it writes a new configuration file but when I reboot the system the graphic servers doesn't start so I remain without graphical desktop environment.

The command nvidia-settings in the terminal says that 'Nvidia driver is not loaded'.

I've updated kernel to 5.4 and 5.5: the problem is not solved.

During the bootload I've seen an error regarding the loading of kernel modules, with systemctl... command doing a recovery boot mode it says that the problem is the Nvidia driver.

So, now I'm confused:

- how can I see which graphic card is active?

- how can I choose the one I want to be active?

- why 'additional drivers' doesn't work (there is not this option also in software-properties).

Only for reference and hoping this could help: this machine is in triple boot, amongst the others Lubuntu 20.04 works fine (Nvidia-settings works).

nvidia-xconfig

From the package information:

This tool is deprecated. The NVIDIA drivers now automatically integrate with the Xorg Xserver configuration. Creating an xorg.conf is no longer needed for normal setups.

You should post the full, verbatim error message rather than a vague description. Check the systemd journal and the dmesg(8) output.

Check the X.Org log (if you're using X) or the systemd journal.

Some machines have options in the firmware ("BIOS") to either permanently enable or disable the discrete GPU.

Otherwise try Bumblebee (with the optirun command) or PRIME.

In contrast to *buntu, Debian cannot support the proprietary NVIDIA drivers in the official release because they do not conform to the Free Software Guidelines and your card is probably too new for nouveau.

Why did you buy NVIDIA hardware if you wanted to use Debian? That's just asking for trouble

Well, I know nvidia-xconfig is deprecated, but when you are desperate...

Also updating the kernel has been a desperate move... I've done it since updating the kernel in Lubuntu has solved several problems in this notebook, specially regarding the wifi adapter (also in this case).

In every desktop environment there is an option to manage eventual additional drivers; also in 'software-properties' (both qt and gtk) there is, usually, this menu. In this case, no...

Well, I've tried Debian 10 on another older notebook (with LXDE), and I was very intrigued... the notebook was a very special offer (499€)!!

I really don't have a clue about NVIDIA but IIRC the proprietary blob won't always build with the very latest kernel versions and it looks like the module for the backported kernel is missing in your box.

If you wait a bit then somebody experienced with NVIDIA issues may offer better assistance.

It sounds like it's an Optimus laptop, so you should read that section in the wiki and decide whether to use Bumblebee or Prime to access the Nvidia card. Right now, it's probably using the Intel GPU, which is default.

You could let us know what hardware and driver situation you have at the moment by installing inxi and providing the output of

Well thank you for your support, I really don't understand anything about graphic cards and I didn't know that my notebook had Optimus technology (by the way, I see that the graphic card supports it, on the notebook data sheet there is nothing about).

So, yes: I found the link you provided, but I was not sure. I will immediately give it a try!

I will write a feedback later.

(with Lubuntu 20.04 the Nvidia driver is loaded, Nvidia-settings starts and it permits to me to choose which graphic card will be operative at the next reboot - only to understand something more, I like to learn)

With Bumblebee, nvidia-settings has to be started with

This assumes you correctly followed the Debian wiki, like I suggested in my first answer, and Bumblebee is working. Since you don't seem to want to look at the umpteen other threads from users here that got it working, and you have inxi installed now, check the output of

to see if the nvidia card is doing the 3D rendering with the second command. Like on the laptop I'm using right now:

Well, I've read a lot of threads (not only in Debian user forums) before to write mine, I've tried a lot of things, but I was not successful: if I can, I prefer not to write here since I like things that go smooth.

I had the same problem with a fresh debian 10 installation.
It is really frustrating!!!

The wiki https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers doesn' t say to install all the required kernels headers:

It states to install only the generic (?) headers:

But it is not enough, I had to use also:

But in the section "How to install NVIDIA driver by using the official nvidia.com package step by step instructions", better to use the debian package although it could break the GUI...
(uname -r) is the kernel that you are using.

So maybe is this the problem.

Before it is better to make a backup with timeshift, so you won' t lost the GUI.
I don' t know if the kernels from the backports will work, maybe I will try.
