T495 No sound/slow video

#1 Post by dotrosedotnet »

This is driving me mad. I basically have my full installation set up, but at some point video started playing slow with no audio. Since I wasn't testing video throughout the installation process, I don't know what did it.

I suspect deeply that it has something to do with the sound or audio drivers/hardware, which is why I put this under hardware. I haven't had this problem with any other computer. Sorry if I put it in the wrong place.

maybe somebody knows why this could be happening? it seems to be the case whether or not the T495 is docked.

Have you installed the non-free firmware? Please copypaste the output of:

Code: Select all

apt policy firmware-nonfree firmware-amd-graphics

I had it installed and then uninstalled it last night, to see if that would help. did not. BTW I'm running bullseye, as buster wasn't working.

Code: Select all

$ apt policy firmware-nonfree firmware-amd-graphics

Testing is a development branch so it breaks sometimes. There is a mandatory transition delay from sid so if it is broken then it can stay broken for a while.

I appreciate that. I'm really hoping that I can fix this with some settings adjustments. The interesting thing is that the audio/video seemed to work right when the installation completed, and then not again after that. relatedly, the NixOS that I had installed before this gave me a similar experience, with the audio/video working on the live linux before install, and then not working after install. I'm going crazy now for over a week just needing a working computer.

EUREKA MOMENT. I took the computer off the ultra dock and rebooted and video played at normal speed with sound!! so now to figure out how to disable whatever the ultra dock is doing to the sound.

uuunngghh this dock is maddening. so I can take the comp off the dock while it is running, and then video just starts playing normally! even if the video was playing badly before I remove the computer from the dock. Then I can put the comp back on the dock and... everything gets unpredictable. sometimes video continues playing normally, but then HDMI doesn't connect video. but the usb also doesn't work. Which is now making me think that the HDMI on the dock is part of the problem... so how do I disable that?

Try the stable release with the backported amdgpu firmware & CPU µcode (and possibly the newer kernel also, the jury's out on whether the 3000-series Ryzens need that) to eliminate a problem with the shifting sands of the development branches.

is this the moment where I realize that I complimented you on the signature that answers the question that I asked right before complimenting your signature?

I'm glad somebody appreciates it, I had to remove my services from the MX forums because anti-racist signatures are considered "controversial" there :roll:

Unfortunately, that's because they are.

Might you be able to offer any more direction? I'm still stuck in bullseye. I have the audio half working now, but apt is really messed up. I'm still not sure how to move forward with your last directive.
