ThinkPad TrackPoint buttons stopped working after update

#1 Post by TorrentsAreCommunism »

Hi,

After yesterday routine update I noticed that my trackpoint buttons stopped working. That's annoying, because those buttons are the main buttons I use on my laptop at all.

Laptop model: Lenovo ThinkPad E595 20NF001YRT

OS: Debian GNU/Linux bullseye/sid x86_64

Desktop: Gnome 3.36.4 Wayland

Yesterday update:

Code: Select all

Start-Date: 2020-08-01 12:24:10

End-Date: 2020-08-01 12:25:13
dmidecode -t 21 output:

Code: Select all

# dmidecode 3.2
Getting SMBIOS data from sysfs.
SMBIOS 3.1.1 present.

Handle 0x0032, DMI type 21, 7 bytes
Built-in Pointing Device
	Type: Track Point
	Interface: PS/2
	Buttons: 3

Handle 0x0033, DMI type 21, 7 bytes
Built-in Pointing Device
	Type: Touch Pad
	Interface: PS/2
	Buttons: 2
That's really weird, ipp-usb doesn't seem to be connected with trackpoint, libinput whatsoever.

Also I noticed that my brightness became somewhat broken, since then it always defaults to max brightness after restart.

I would appreciate any clues on how to make all three trackpoint buttons work again.

ipp-usb is related to CUPS, which you just updated.
From your update list, the suspects for me are udev and libudev1. You also have the brightness issue now.
For the record, nothing suspicious happened on my Thinkpad E470 also running Testing, when it got those updates last night.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to reinstall udev and libudev1. No difference, unfortunately.

I'll also try to dig in the brightness issue, maybe, it would shed some light on those brokerages.

I am sorry, I meant to say that you should try downgrading them (old versions are available in Snapshot Debian.) You would have to simulate it first, for they are dependencies of numerous packages, which may demand this particular version (unlikely, but possible.)
Note that it may not be the solution, but they seem to be the only relevant packages from the variables.

Could you check if any track-point-related package was updated lately? Maybe it was, but the issue arose when other packages changed, say, the kernel or an Xorg component.

About the brightness issue, this message might help you troubleshoot it. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78471
It is an old post about an old laptop that I had, but the information should still be relevant. And you know that your system worked perfectly until last week.

I could try to downgrade and see what happens, thanks for the advice.

As for other, more relevant packages, there were several updates of firmware packages the day before. Maybe, that's the case. But I'm not sure if firmware involves trackpoint.
