Best way to create Debian Live USB stick.

#1 Post by axkibe »

What is the best way to create a persistent live USB stick (where I can install packages on the fly, that saves command history etc., mostly used to fix computers, mount file systems, use gparted etc.).

Mostly like Knoppix used to be, but that is too much out of date already.

It's about an install image (where I dd it on the stick), and I don't want to use any Windows Tools to create the stick, but an existing Debian installation.

you might find here what you could use very well:

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... so-hybrid/
Debian 10 - Buster on Compulab Fitlet2
Debian 12 - Bookworm on Acer Spin 1

install Debian on a usb stick instead of a hard disk. The installer allows you to select the disk where Debian will be installed.

I suppose this is a good approach, however, /tmp should be put on a ramdisk, no?

I suppose systemd mounts /tmp and temp files on a tmpfs. Not sure though. Personally I dont care where /tmp is. But if you do then sure you can mount /tmp on a tmpfs.

Have a look at Antix.
The Most Extensive Live-usb on the Planet!
I can't make promises but it might be worth a look.

The most recent Knoppix 8.6.1 is based on Buster and has kernel 5.3.5. Not so old.

If you don't want to install to USB, what you are after is "Debian live USB with persistence". Search for that will give you some ideas. There's some official Debian guide to that somewhere I couldn't find quickly, but this may help - https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... ersistence
