Debian 10 don't boot

Dear all,
I' am now using debian about 2 years, with only linux starter problems. Debian 9.5 running without problems. In legacy mode.
Debian 10 is an entirely different story. It refuse to boot after installation. No matter use legacy or uefi mode.
As debian start to boot, it show a list ok. (ok in green). the next page keep black, with only a bar in the upper left corner, and nothing react. (mouse or keys)
I must press the start button until the computer switch off.
Finally I try on an older dell latitude, in uefi mode its fails, but in legacy mode it works.
I use a msi, delete the ssd with windows 10, replace a WD 500 ssd, and install debian 9.5. No problems.
But debian 10 keeps refusing.
So, I don't think it is the software, I guess sometingh in the bios of the msi. Onley I have no idea.
I hope that some body here can help me.

It's probably booting, but can't run the graphical desktop because of missing firmware. You don't mention your hardware, so it's impossible to say what is needed. When you get the black screen with a cursor, press Ctrl-Alt-F1, which should give you a terminal. Log in as root, and you can update the firmware as necessary. If you put your hardware - manufacturer, CPU, etc - in a search engine along with Debian Buster, you may get some pertinent information about what is needed. You might get some here too, if you tell us what hardware you have.

may give you a hint.

Firmware support for older computers may also be dropped for Debian 10. That would explain why Debian 9 works, and Debian 10 doesn't.

I have the same issue with my Lenovo G50 laptop.
Once it boots and you have the black screen. Go to terminal 1 or 2 by pressing Ctrl-Alt F1 or F2, in my case I have to hit ctrl-alt Fn key F1.
Log in and you can run sudo dmesg -H, this will give you page by page info. When you get to firmware that is needed it will be in red error messages.
Then you can use sudo apt search to find the firmware needed and then install.
In a lot of cases you need to start with sudo apt install firmware-linux but there may be a few other specific things you need even after you get the graphics working.

@sgosnell, It's just the newer msi GF 63 that refuse to boot debian 10. Not the older dell E6530. On the Dell debian 9 and 10 boot after installation in legacy mode.

@hallvor, I know what a tty shell is, the problem that the software do not react, so its imposeble to do somthing.
only restart the computer, push the start button until the computer switch off.
So, it looklike it chrached.
Now I use deb 10 on the dell, without any problems.

@ NetNutt, I will try out your advice, Ctrl-Alt F1 or F2 to reach the tty shell. Mouse and keys did not react on the black screen.
I will tell you the result.

I have tried 3 times to install debian 10.5. The first in uefi mode, the second in legacy mode, and the third in lagacy mode and connect to internet.
All the boot failed after the sreen with the OK in green, the next page is black and in the upper left corner a small bar.
Then the system is virtual dead. Nothing works, no keys, no mouse.
The computer comes alive when I pushed the start knob.
I talk now about the msi gf 63.
Is there somebody with an idea?

You are getting a black screen with a flashing cursor because you have Nvidia video that needs special packages installed.

EITHER

Temporarily try nomodeset
This will bypass the Nvidia video so you can at least get into the system. Then you can fix it.

Use Ctrl+F1
Which will give you a virtual Terminal and install the correct Nvidia firmware.

@arochester thank you for your reaction. " the screen is black and a small bar in the left upper corner" This is indeed what habben, only no blinking cursor.
In this situation, nothing will use, nothing works, so the computer is dead, Too, no acces to tty terminal via ctrl-F1, the keys and mouse don't work, the computer is virtual dead.
Still I wil try out your remarks.

I have a question, in wich mode must I adjust the bios of the msi, for installing debeian 10.5.
The choice is legacy, uefi, or uefi with csm.
And fast boot, and secure boot, on or off?

I am running a similar MSI GP63 8RD laptop, and the advice about the Nvidia drivers is sadly dead wrong, as usual, for an Optimus laptop like these. It's always going to be starting with the Intel GPU. That Intel Coffee Lake 630 GPU requires nonfree firmware in Debian from the firmware-misc-nonfree package. Much of the other hardware will also require nonfree firmware.

zlow, if I'm not mistaken, you didn't have the GF63 working at all in Debian Stretch--is this correct? Or did you need backports there?

When I install MX Linux on my GP63, I also need to go into the UEFI setup and add the MX efi file to the boot file options--I think, it's been a while. I do have to go into the setup and add a Live USB every time I want to try one of those on it, otherwise it won't see it.

Maybe you could try one of the MX ISOs as a live Session to see if you can get a GUI with those. Any of the MX 19.X releases should work.

Hi stevepusser, thank you for your reaction.
The installation of debian stretch (Debian 9.5) is no problem on the msi.
In legacy mode, and I use always gnome. This is the reason why I am surprised debian 10 don't boot.
On an older Dell D10 works OK in legacy mode.
I am certain no computer expert, there must be a big difference between 9 and 10.
On the forum of msi, somebody could not install kubuntu. An advice there was install in eufi csm.
On the Debian site I have see that one can download the os with non-free software.
This is what I go to try.
