Adding another DE

I have buster 10.5 lxqt installed on 2 old laptops, is it safe to install Mate or Xfce on top of lxqt. Similar attempts on another distro failed.

The laptops don't belong to me.

But seriously, yes it should be fine. The only real problem you'll face will be menu bloat.

Use this to select another desktop:

# tasksel
But that will install all of the related desktop applications as well so you might prefer the core desktop metapackages, I think the Debian wiki pages for each desktop list them.

Usually other distros allow other desktops to also install, much like Debian, so now I'm curious what this other distro is and how you tried to install the other DEs.
