Is it possible to install gcstar on buster
I want to install gcstar on Debian Buster. There is no package for gcstar in the Buster repository. Is it possible to install gcstar from source on Buster? If it is possible, then how?
Re: Is it possible to install gcstar on buster
I have no idea what gcstar is, but it should be possible to install from source. Download the source code, configure, make, and compile it, then install with apt or dpkg. The source code may have instructions on how to do it if you read them.
A 15-second internet search for "gcstar linux" turned up a source for a .deb package that should install easily enough.
https://pkgs.org/download/gcstar I'm not sure I would completely trust packages from outside the repos, but if you want it, that seems to be an easy enough way to get it.

Take my advice, I'm not using it.

Latest release version appears to be 4 1/2 years old. Your best bet would be to get it from Git and build it as there seems to be at least a little development there.

If you want to install from source like a caveperson then follow the steps in the package() function in the Arch Linux AUR package: https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ ... gcstar#n27
Better to package it up properly though: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debmake-doc/

Re: Is it possible to install gcstar on buster
The Stretch package installs and runs on Buster, at least for me. It's a Perl package, which means it's a set of scripts with none of the issues that come with compiled binary packages.
I'm not saying that any of the online databases it accesses are still going to work, in which case a build of the newer git pull may be better.

No, I don't want to use it just for one release of Debian, I want long term solution. Does Debian contains package for cataloguing software? I want software with active development.sunrat wrote:Latest release version appears to be 4 1/2 years old. The first thing to do is some searching. Try searching the Internet for "alternatives for gcstar." You will get several hits. When you see something you might like see if it is available in Debian. Scroll down to "Search package directories" and use the search. Check availability in Stable, Testing and Unstable to see if there is continuing support.pythagorasmk wrote:No, I don't want to use it just for one release of Debian, I want long term solution. That forum post is incorrect, libgtk2-perl is available in stable and unstable currently but not in testing.arochester wrote:http://forums.gcstar.org/viewtopic.php?id=18288

If you're looking for a long-term solution, the GTK3 port of gcstar should be considered after Buster.
