Or more precisely, won't build on 5.9 yet.

NVIDIA Doesn't Expect To Have Linux 5.9 Driver Support For Another Month https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... .9-Delayed

Do you have a source for this? Did Nvidia pull their fingers out of their arse and defy the predictions in the Phoronix article I posted?

The holdup was due to changes in the 5.9+ kernels dealing with how proprietary code worked around GPL:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... Shim-Taint
towo (siduction lead dev) said there was a patch with which he could work around it in the kernel but couldn't as it broke GPL.

To be pedantic, there is no such thing as Debian 11 yet, either.

Got it backported for MX 19 on a pure Buster base and on the MX 18 base, which has similar backports to make it like Buster. Pure Stretch is a no-go. There is a combination of patched versions of other drivers and brand-new versions in Sid, too: 390xx and 340xx legacy, plus Tesla 418 and 440 drivers. Tesla 450 drivers still have not been updated.

Code: Select all

optirun inxi -G

nvidia-driver package from backports. Look in the Debian wiki. Presumably you know how to use backports anyway as that's where you should have installed your 5.9 kernel from.

That 5.9 kernel looks like Bullseye's, to be honest, and the driver is in Bullseye, too. I don't see any 5.9 kernel in backports. Sid now is up to 5.9.6.

How to install the correct driver depends on your Nvidia GPU, whether you have just the Nvidia GPU or a hybrid laptop (optimus) setup, and is detailed in the Debian wiki, where we ask you to look first.

I did a new install of debian 10 stable. I do have a gtx1660. Followed the wiki: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsD ... stallation
I added to /etc/apt/sources.list the backport repositories.

Then I installed:

Code: Select all

apt install -t buster-backports linux-headers-amd64
Then:

Code: Select all

# apt update
# apt install -t buster-backports nvidia-driver
systemctl reboot

Code: Select all

ws1@ws1:~$ nvidia-settings

ERROR: NVIDIA driver is not loaded

ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

Code: Select all

ws1@ws1:~$ uname -a
Linux ws1 4.19.0-12-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.152-1 (2020-10-18) x86_64 GNU/Linux
I do have:

Code: Select all

ws1@ws1:~$ lspci -k | grep -EA2 "VGA|3D|Display"
02:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Red Hat, Inc. QXL paravirtual graphic card (rev 04)
Subsystem: Red Hat, Inc QEMU Virtual Machine
        Kernel driver in use: qxl
--
06:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660] (rev a1)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660]
        Kernel modules: nvidia
So far I am using vnc to access my vm and also the physical gpu.But I want to have only my gtx1660 running. After editing the xml and enabling passthrough for my gtx1660 I only get a blank screen...I guess due to not being able to load the nvidia-driver. How can I fix this?

If someone is using the testing branch it's a vital piece of information that should be disclosed in their first post. Testing is not for people "new to Linux" and it's users are expected to know how to install basic packages. </grumpy first post of the day>

Edit: thanks for the new info you posted while I was writing. So you're in a VM. That's a whole different issue for which you should have started a new thread. I can't really help you but I'm pretty sure you can't run passthrough easily with a single graphics card.

I'm pretty sure that the 1660 is supported by the standard nvidia-driver in Buster non-free, so that begs the question (besides the virtual machine mess) as to why the backports version. The normal procedure is get it working on stable if it's supported, then upgrade from backports.

Hi, thx all for support (even if I entered this post not being mine. I really thought my issue had to do with the latest drivers in experimental) Although I posted I did a new reinstall, before that I used the experimental nvidia-driver and basically discovered I created a Frakendebian when after a system update&upgrade it just wont boot up. After that -and being new to linux and Debian- I had such a confusion that I decided to post here. As you mentioned the gtx1660 runs fine following ONLY the steps described here: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsD ... figuration.
What I did to solve my fresh install issue was:
-

Code: Select all

apt remove -t buster-backports linux-headers-amd64
-

Code: Select all

apt install linux-headers-amd64
-edit the xml and leave the gtx1660 as only gpu.
I misunderstood:
If you're using the kernel from Debian Backports, you must run the same command but with the -t flag followed by the name of your backports source. For instance, if you're using Buster's backports on a 64-bit system, you might run:
I actually was not using the kernel from banckports.
Just wanted to explain how I solved it in case it hepls anyone in the future.

I have gone through hell on earth with nvidia and use with Debian and AV Linux. Their drivers never work by following instructions for installing and usually result in specialized knowledge of modifying a Linux kernel which is something far above my abilities and knowledge. I have written some really hard core criticisms to their corporate headquarters concerning problems with a PNY GeForce NVIDIA GT 1030. I'm into using Blender graphic arts program and needed to upgrade with this add on card for better performance using that program. Totally caused a complete destruction of an internal hard drive with three different operating systems that had to be reinstalled taking many hours of time. Even on Windows 7 this card caused continuous operating system crashing and closing. This card wound up in my closet useless until I got on-line with internet a couple of years later. Tested the card and installed on a newer computer (did not work earlier without an internet connection) and it finally started working with Linux operating systems when connected to internet. Nvidia does have all kinds of drivers available yet for my personal situation had nothing but frustrating experience. I find that as an add on card AMD Radeon work much better and usually install successfully following installation instructions and packages available in the Debian repositories. I also use Fedora and this particular Nvidia card on Fedora was ridiculously slow as though some kind of worm virus was on the operating system, totally useless.

I use a GTX970 with both Debian/KDE and AVLinux with nvidia driver and it works nicely. I'm sure many other people do too. I also have an older machine with GTX560 Ti which works fine with nouveau.
It is fairly widely acknowledged that AMD cards are a much easier plug n' play option for Linux these days as their open source drivers are included in the kernel and perform well. You should stick with AMD if you can't get your Nvidia to work properly.
