Switching from Windows to Debian on a laptop

#1 Post by tempUSR »

Hey, I'm a new Debian user (Linux in general) and I hope I'm in the right section.
Basically I've experienced some problems while configuring Debian on my laptop and I hope to solve most of them here.
I'm on a ASUS TUF FX504 and I started having problem since the installation:

Had to download the non-free iso, even tho both of them told me that I needed non-free firmware (and to get in the OS -> nouveau.modeset=0).
I probably messed up the configuration of those missing firmwares (iwlwifi and similar names) as it still gives me errors like: iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS.
Also the right click of the touchpad doesn't work anymore, MYASUS HOTKEYS are not available for Linux and this implies that I can't control my FAN Speed (I had 3 different choices) and they don't even seem to work at all (constantly checking my CPU temperature with sensors and it reaches 70/75° by doing nothing).
On dmesg there are other problems that I don't know how to put hands on:

1)
[ 0.452140]ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating [\_SB.PCI0.XHC.RHUB.GPLD], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20180810/dswload2-316)
[ 0.452149]ACPI Error: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20180810/psobject-221)
[ 0.452153]ACPI Error: Skip parsing opcode OpcodeName unavailable (20180810/psloop-543)
And it repeats itself a couple of times with different "[\_SB.PCI0.XHC.RHUB.GPLD]", like "[\_SB.PCI0.XHC.RHUB.TPLD]".

2)
[ 4.823590]iTCO_wdt iTCO_wdt: can't request region for resource [mem 0x00c5fffc-0x00c5ffff]

3)
[drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=16928 end=16929) time 139 us, min 1073, max 1079, scanline start 1072, end 1080
And it repeats itself a bunch of times

Sorry if I'm taking you guys the time to read all of this :!:

Can you install inxi and give us the result of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
in a terminal? Copy and paste the output and then place it in code tags like my command.

I suspect your laptop may be too new to work well with Debian 10, but the inxi output should let us know for sure.

So what firmware did you install? Please show exactly what commands you used.
It also appears you have Optimus dual graphics which requires special procedures to install and configure.
Time to do more research, start in the Debian wiki.

And please use code tags when posting terminal output.

Right-click is a 2-finger clilck, center-wheel click is 3-fingers. This is the usual, but it might vary depending on the trackpad manufacurer. Google will give you more information on that.

For the fan control, install lm-sensors.
Take my advice, I'm not using it.

(sorry if I didn't use the code tags)
Those are the firmwares installed:

ii firmware-realtek 20200918-1 all Binary firmware for Realtek wired/wifi/BT adapters
ii fwupd-amd64-signed 1.2.13+2 amd64 Tools to manage UEFI firmware updates (signed)
ii intel-microcode 3.20200616.1~deb10u1 amd64 Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs
I can't remember the specific commands I used, I was in a hurry (needed wifi and couldn't use ethernet) but I've probably just used apt/dpkg related commands.
And yes, I should definitely check the wiki :)

I feel dumb rn, thanks for the help :D
I'll check some lm-sensors guides, I'm afraid of damaging something with the scan configuration (First time I used it I just wrote YES to the first one just to check the CPU temperature)

For learning how a package works, read the manual. The quick way to do that is to run "man packagename" in a terminal, replacing packagename with the actual name of the package. You can also run the package with the --help parameter, sometimes just -h, sometimes not. It depends on how the developer coded it. Sometimes the exact command can be slightly different. In the case of lm-sensors, it's just 'sensors'. Some help and manuals, sensors included, is minimal, so you may want to use Google for more information. TBH I've seldom used sensors, and had to use Google to get what I posted.

A quick Google search for your model returns many hits on running Linux on that model, most if not all reporting problems. It might be worth your time to run some of those down.
Take my advice, I'm not using it.

And is anyone else reads man-pages these days, apropos is handy if you don't know the actual package name.

Code: Select all

arto@acer:~$ man lm-sensors
No manual entry for lm-sensors
arto@acer:~$ apropos sensors
sensors (1) - print sensors information
sensors-conf-convert (8) - sensors configuration conversion
sensors-detect (8) - detect hardware monitoring chips
sensors.conf (5) - libsensors configuration file
xfce4-sensors (1) - Sensors application for xfce4
arto@acer:~$

The manual entry for lm-sensors is simplly 'sensors', "man sensors". Or "sensors --help". And I just noticed, there is a package named fancrontrol, which is installed as a systemd component. It has a decent man page, and works through lm-sensors.

Disclaimer: Everything I know about fan control i've learned through DuckDuckGo in the past few days. So do not take any of this to the bank. The check might bounce.

From what I can see, installing fancontrol and lm-sensors should provide the necessary functionality for maintaining the temperature at an acceptable level. The lm-sensors and associated libs get the high and critical temps for the chips from the chips themselves, and put that in the config file. Or else the config file is already made from info provided by the chip maker. In any case, the file /etc/sensors3.conf has the information. Fancontrol runs under systemd, and monitors the sensors, turning on the fan as necessary. I haven't found anything that indicates any further configuration is necessary. I am happy to be corrected.
Take my advice, I'm not using it.

That processor was released Q2/2018 and the buster freeze started 2019-02-12 so you might have a better experience with the kernel (metapackage), firmware & µcode from the buster-backports repository.

Without any driver for the Nvidia GPU, it may be on all the time. For most optimus systems, it can be the biggest power drain/heat source.
