Abruptly lost sound

Debian laptop on buster+ backports, just ran dist-upgrade.
I am using external speakers, since the speakers in laptop are horrible.
I tried to plug in a headphone in speaker port and did not get any output, but got alert about new device.
Plugged spekers back in and no sound.
Tried rebooting, no luck.
Went into pavu control to see if anything was muted, everything is maxed.
I am t a loss of what to do, please help.

Also check alsamixer levels. pavucontrol can show volumes up but they still may be down or muted in ALSA.
It's quite unusual to lose sound after a simple dist-upgrade. What packages were upgraded?

I think that what happened is that I plugged head phone in, it muted speakers.
I set output device to speakers again in pavu control, but now they are muted.
So the problem should be to unmute speakers.
How do?
Also in the command that displays sinks there is a SUSPENDED flag in combined sink.
How bring it out of that state?

Yes it looks like it somehow switched to the HDMI output. In pavucontrol, go to the Configuration tab and set the profile for HDMI to "Off" if you don't use it.

Followed instructions and in pavu control I set to off but still SOL.

Sorry, that confused me. Analog output is listed as "card 1" in aplay -l but "index=0" in pacmd list-sinks.
I'm out of ideas.

I think that should do the trick. I had problems with timidity in the past, same computer.
If I try to complete remove with Synaptic it will take away kde-full and that package is useful. will try to purge from command line or simply remove without using complete removal.

Losing kde-full won't matter, it's only a metapackage. I thought the timidity issue was fixed ages ago but saw someone post they encountered it a few days ago.
Work through the chain logically.
What application are you using to play audio? Does it show in Playback tab of pavucontrol and are the meters moving? Is the correct sink shown in the dropdown list? Are your speakers plugged in correctly? Does a different application work?
You could also try bypassing PulseAudio completely. Some players allow you to select direct ALSA output. I use DeadBeef but it's not in the repo. Maybe Clementine, Gmusicbrowser, QodLibet, Audacious?

Application is built-in Analog stereo, that is the sink I see in pasystray. don't know about drop down list, there is also Analog Stereo duplex, tried but it does not work either.
Would like to try something that is in repo, maybe audacious?
