(EE) Cannot run in Framebuffer mode. Please specify busID's.

#1 Post by Gunna Monster »

A few months ago I had sucessfully installed Debian 9.12.0 on my HP Elitebook 745 G4. However, I wanted to have a newer distro of Debian, so I upgraded. Everything worked, until a few days ago, when I got kernel 4.19.0-13, and since it didn't work, I tried reinstalling the official amdgpu-pro drivers: https://wiki.debian.org/AMDGPUDriverOnStretchAndBuster2 , but instead, I just get a flashing cursor in the top left of my screen. The screen also doesn't resize itself accordingly, so all the text is too big. I ran dmesg, lspci (and lspci -v), and checked my Xorg log file.
lspci -v:

Did you remove your old kernel? Or is it still there?

If you have not removed it, have you tried booting into that? On the screen where says Boot into Debian move down to Advanced and try there.

Re: (EE) Cannot run in Framebuffer mode. Please specify busI

The prior system may have used radeon? And if so didn't need the firmware.

Now with buster the amdgpu is added, as good as the pro, and does need the firmware.

Verify firmware-amd-graphics is installed and maybe revert to the radeon driver that appears to support your thing.

If you have not removed it, have you tried booting into that? On the screen where says Boot into Debian move down to Advanced and try there.
No, I haven't removed it, but I tried booting it, and no luck, still got the same issue.

Firmware-amd-graphics is installed. Not sure what you mean by reverting to the Radeon driver, because I don't entirely know what driver supports my system.

Code: Select all

lspci -nnkd 1002:
Example:
note Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu

Code: Select all

Here was my output:

Code: Select all

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Carrizo [1002:9874] (rev ca)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Wani [Radeon R5/R6/R7 Graphics] [103c:8236]
	Kernel modules: amdgpu
00:01.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Kabini HDMI/DP Audio [1002:9840]
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Kabini HDMI/DP Audio [103c:8236]
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
	Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel
Does this mean I need amdgpu? Or amdgpu_pro? I noticed that it says Kernel modules: amdgpu.
Thanks

You should only use the AMDGPU-PRO drivers if you have a "Pro" series graphics card and even then performance for games and suchlike is better under the open source amdgpu driver.

In your case a kernel driver is not loaded for the card so check for any blocks on the module:

Code: Select all

grep -R 'blacklist.*amd.*' /{etc,usr/lib}/modprobe.d
But I really don't know how much damage that dodgy "guide" in the Debian wiki has done to your system. Did you not see the warnings?

Thank you, this worked. Their was a blacklist-amdgpu.conf in /etc/modprobe.d which was causing all the trouble. I am 12 and this is my first laptop that I installed Linux on. I previously had experience playing with Linux on my Raspberrry Pi.

Do you know what would have created that blacklist file for the amdgpu driver? It appeared on Dec 27, which was the day I tried to update the kernel and re-installed the drivers.

Probably installing the AMDGPU-PRO drivers.
