Amarok - no mp3 support

Postby thewanderer » 2007-06-02 11:10

Yesterday, after an Amarok upgrade (i'm using unstable), mp3 support broke. This is the version table:
Code: Select all
  *** 1.4.5-5 0
        500 http://ftp.pl.debian.org unstable/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1.4.4-4 0
        500 http://ftp.pl.debian.org testing/main Packages

Does anyone know how I can get mp3 without downgrading?

Same problem here, googling it quickly it appears this has happened on other distros before, solution normally appears to be grabbing a package with the required codec in, not sure where to look for that though...

Do you have xine installed like totem-xine or gxine?

If so, try playing mp3s in there so we can try to isolate if it is an amarok problem or a xine problem.

When I had a problem like this but with ogg I had to recompile my own xine.

If it is an amarok problem you might have to downgrade. :(

Another trick I have is, if it is an amarok problem, try to do this

sudo apt-get build-dep amarok

it will install some development libraries but at the same time it might satisfy a dependency that was accidently broken.

Is totem using the xine engine?

If it is you may have a xine problem.

You can find out by typing

sudo apt-get install totem-xine

if it says it is already installed then it is using xine.

I don't know which engine exaile uses. I've been needing to try that one myself.

yeah, totem-xine is installed. Looking at the history in synaptic the upgrades below appear to be related to it dying:

amarok-xine 1.4.5-4 ->1.4.5-5
totem-xine (2.16.6-1) to 2.18.2-1
libxine1(1.1.2+dfsg-4) to 1.1.6-2

Had the same problem earlier today. For me, amarok gave a message that a demux was missing. I searched "demux" in synaptic and found that libxine1-plugins was not installed. After installing this (and several dependencies), it's working great again. BTW, I am running SID.

Hope this helps.

I'm running testing and I've the same problem. I haven't got libxine1-plugins pkg. Can you list the depedencies you have installed?

Fixed in debian testing

Fixed in debian testing too. Delete your ~/.xine and reinstall libxine1.

hi all

well i have a similar problem here. yesterday i re-installed my Debian system and im having a problem with amarok.

i can use exaile to play all my mp3s however i really like amarok and i would like to try and get amarok working.

i am using Unstable release and i have tried everything in this thread. i can play mp3s with any other player on the system however amarok keeps saying this:
The xine-engine claims it cannot play mp3 files.

Now i have deleted the ./xine dirrectory in my home dir, and i have reinstalled all the libxine1 things.
i was not able to run this command:
apt-get build-dep amarok

it gives me an error that it can't find 2 files. so i guess i can't install the development librarys.

also i have the gstreamer-xine installed not the totem-xine

is there any other things that i can try to get amarok working?

You need to:
Code: Select all
apt-get install libxine1-ffmpeg
.

Yes, you now have to install libmodplug0c2 to get mp3 support.

hi all,

well just an update, i have now gotten amarok to work. there was a bug filed on the debian mailing list, and i guess that is what i had come across as well.
the bug number was #437693
basically i had to install "libmodplug0c2" and bingo the mp3 playback in amarok worked.

i guess this is an issue in the latest unstable release of Debain for this package.

thanks to all for their help.
