Debian Live Password???

Postby Soapm » 2013-03-28 23:12

Why would there be a password on the Debian Live disc? I was dd'ing over a drive and the screen timed out and locked. Now the thing is asking for a password. i am sure i can find it through Google but my question is why would it be passworded? What would be the point if the password is public domain? Why don't they put the password on the log in screen if they're going to do that?

This is frustrating and I can imaging what this would do to someone who doesn't have another PC in the house. You'd been locked out and have to reboot the system to get back in which means losing all your work. Then you'd have to baby sit the live system or risk the screen locking again??? Who thought of putting a password on live disk???

But you decided that it would be so much more effective to rant about it to a bunch of people who can't possibly affect it, one way or the other.

Interesting choice.

Actually, from what I know it is not supposed to have a password. Which live image are you using? I will say this, the live images aren't exactly well maintained. Though that looks like it could change soon: http://syn.theti.ca/2013/03/24/debuggin ... bian-live/

IIRC

user = user
pass = live

I might be wrong.

It seems the wheezy live images do have a password correctly noted as live

I solved this problem adding this option at the end of the line (live option, grub screen, pressing tab key):

live-config

then the sysmtem autologins with the live config user

I have to agree Soapm, this is very frustrating and I view it as a fault... There should be absolutely no reason to have a default user password on a Live CD, root password, sure, but the user, NO. I to was irate to discover that the screen timed out after a very short period (3 min, which is also bull) and that the Lock feature was turned on by default. This should not be the case...

So overall, it was poorly implemented. There should have been no password, the screen timeout should be set to something a little higher, and the Lock Screen should not be enabled by default. I could see this being default settings on a fresh install. But not a Live CD. So, call it a rant if you like, but I think it was a called for one.

To ajsmith21,

This is in Debian User forums. If you want to tell the developers of the live images, use the link in https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-live/

No, he decided to try to discuss his problem with some nice people. There was no reason for you to respond.

My suggestion is to :
learn howto get root on the Live system the way it is supposed to be "gotten",
( there maybe more then one way to do it correctly, currently, as posted above ),
then if you want to also use a non-default method to get root on Debian Live,
change the password to one of your own choosing.

I just was locked out of the Live CD, I wondered if the torrents were corrupted, I restarted and Googled so found this page,open for 5 years for this issue. But what would I have done if I had no Internet connection? I'd have probably continued suffering with Freya.
This is not ranting. Live CD's are used by noobs like myself when trying to find a way out of Internet slavery.

I have installed a Linux distro that has NO ROOT by default. I did set one but there must be others who haven't and that would complicate things.

Because the live CDs are more of an afterthought in Debian.
People on this forum are also rarely open to any negative feedback
on Debian, so rather save your time and report it to a mailing list about live CDs.
I'm sure they'll appreciate any help.

I made my own live... with persistent settings.
It is now configured in such a way that when my boot disk would fail... the live usb has all the settings to make it a replacement.
After rebooting I can continue immediately. Later I can put back my image or do other things to repair the system.

For Debian 8.1 it works similar, just adapt names...
http://cosmolinux.no-ip.org/raconetlinu ... tence.html

Works like a charm....
PS: of course my live passwords are as on the original disk....
