Well, fair enough, but you noticed the -1 and that itself is at least careful eyes. It's obvious once you see it but not until then.rickh wrote:It was obvious here:Telemachus wrote:Good catch.rickh wrote:Do you have an /etc/apt/apt.conf or /etc/apt/preferences file?

It seems to me you've done everything the way you should, assuming you haven't missed a step. Correct me if i'm wrong:
1. You installed Etch, did an update/dist-upgrade as root.
2. Changed the sources list from stable to testing and did an update/dist-upgrade as root.
3. Nothing works, there has been no dist-upgrade to Lenny, the apps you have installed already are the old stable versions that came with the original Etch installation. Right?
4. I recently changed from Lenny to Etch (a quick reinstall). Keep in mind that Lenny is BETA.
5. As for us speculating that the user screws up is based on years watching it happens over and over. If you are gonna be a Linux user get used to it. The boys in this forum are pretty good and experienced at screwing up and solving their problems and ours.
Personally, this kind of problem has never hapenned to me.
6. Burn another iso, this time the Lenny weekly version and do a netinstall, or install the business card iso (30 mb), put the parameter 'expert' at the boot prompt, and at the end, choose Testing.
7. Or, you can bad mouth Debian and install another distro and be happy. Life is too short.

And wait until sometime Monday's for the weekly Lenny cd/dvd. That way you get all the updates through then since they post them on Monday's.
Downloading Wednesday's won't help if Monday's didn't, at least with the full images. The Debian Installer netinstall stuff is updated daily, both Lenny and Sid versions (both of which install Lenny). Might as well use the Sid version for Lenny installs using a beta installer since it's got the latest fixes in it daily.
I still use Etch media to install, then upgrade, but that only works if the Etch Kernel and installation software work with your hardware. So I can see where it's a good thing that the beta Debian Installers now work better than they used to before they reached beta status. If Etch stuff can't work with hardware or connect to the internet, then that Lenny/Sid media is the way to go.

Ok, I think I need a little help here...
upgraded from Etch to Lenny...
after about 4 hours, it gave me an option to keep my default start session or something like that, and I entered d instead of y, which I think was allowing me to manually enter something.
Whatever the case, I couldn't exit out the manual config, and thus finish the upgrade. So--I did something stupid, and restart my computer!!
now, I'm at a text-based session.
I finish the upgrade, answer yes to everything. Seems ok...
I do a aptitude update...seems ok...
I do a aptitude clean...seems ok...
Only problem is, I'm staring at a black screen!!!!! lol, there's only but so many commands i know, and after trying gnome-session (and getting an error that it can't display it) I don't have a clue where to go from here?
I'm guessing Gnome is somehow not setup to run at start?! I dunno? I'm posting from a puppy cd..
Plz HELP

add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
then apt-get get update and apt-get dist-upgrade
Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.og/debian tesing main
those aren't added by changing my sources ending in "etch" to "lenny" tho? I thought they were already in my source list?
Unfortunately I'm now at work for the next 7.5hrs, but i'll have my wife try and edit my source list for me.
Let me see if startx works tho;) tks for the replies fellas..
I think I'm just gonna have to restart...
Not really that big of a deal seeing as I just came from Fedora no more than a week ago, but this is bullshit...
It asked me to press "d" to see other options, and when I did, i couldn't back out and finish the upgrade.
Now, I'm in this text mode jam and don't know what the hell I'm doing? These installers really cripple you if your not above average in computer literacy...
see ya guys in a few days, off to a fresh install
